Large Detroit Delegation to Attend
UJA Annual Conference in New York

A large Detroit delegation is
being mobilized to attend the
annual conference of the United
Jewish Appeal, at Hotel Waldorf
Astoria, New York, Dec. 11-13.
The UJA is the major benefi-
ciary of the Detrbit Allied Jew-
ish Campaign.
Evidence mounted this week
that American Jews intend to
turn this year's annual national
UJA conference into one of the
greatest demonstrations ever
given in this country of un-
swerving support of Israel.
The early volume of responses
confirming attendance tended to
give fresh weight to these ob-
servations:
' (1) American Jews are deep-
ly concerned about the threat
to Israel's safety.
(2) The American Jewish
community is seizing upon the
occasion of the UJA annual
conference to voice its deter-
mination to safeguard Israel's
existence and to strengthen its
hand in the direction of peace
and economic stability.
UJA National Cash Chairman
Joseph Holtzman of Detroit em-
phasized that "Israel's safety is
as greatly dependent on her
economic strength as upon other
factors," adding that "any let-
down in the flow of cash at this
critical time can serve not only
to undermine vital programs of
immigrant settlement and agri-
cultural development but weak-
en Israel generally as she copes
with the greatest threat to her
existence since 1948."
Mr. Holtzman also called upon
members of his 76-man National
Cash Cabinet to assist -communi-
ties in the mobilization of cash,
pointing out that "apart from

the fact that the need for cash
is desperate in Israel, it is im-
portant that before we launch
next year's campaign, we clean
up the current drive" to the
greatest possible extent. He an-
nounced that provision is being
made at the conference for the
remittance of community cash
proceeds but urged that dollars
that become available before the
date of the conference be re-
mitted without delay "in the
light of present events."
The three-day conference will
be addressed by Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt and by other distin-
guished figures in world affairs,
including a high-ranking mem-
ber of the Israel government.

The London Time's
Takes • Issue with
Bennike on Kibya

LONDON, (JTA) — The Times
of London took issue with the
position of Maj. Gen. Vagn Ben-
nike, head of the UN truce ob-
servance organization in Pal-
estine, who had reported to the
Security Council that the raid
on Kibya must have been car-
ried out by regular Israeli army
forces since the Israeli border
settlements did not have types
of arms and equipment known
to have been used in the raid.
In a dispatch from its Jeru-
salem correspondent, the Times
said it was a proven fact that
some border settlements "have
been supplied with arms of ex-
actly the type which Gen. Ben-
nike, in his report on the Kibya
incident to the Security Coun-
cil, said was equipment used ex-
clusively by the regular army."
The Israelis, the d i s p a t c h
added, "have made no attempt
to conceal these settlement ar-
senals from visiting foreign cor-
respondents and p r e s u m a bly
would not have attempted to
conceal them from UN observ-
ers. It may, indeed, be one of
the causes of the failure of the
UN supervisory system in Pales-
tine that its observers are too
few and too harassed by in-
vestigations after the event to
keep a proper watch over the
frontier and to be forewarned
of conditions out of which in-
cidents may develop." "
