Villa-Zion Hospital Open House Sunday

The Villa-Zion Geriatric Hos-
pital, located at 13965 Linwood,
will hold open-house Sunday, 2
to 5 p.m. An invitation is ex ,-
tended to the entire community
to attend the open house and
to inspect the beautiful new
building.
Dr. William Klein, medical

director, stated : "This hospital
is the first of its kind built in
Detroit. Geriatrics deals with
the diseases of the aged, and it
is the intention of this institu-
tion to diagnose and treat its
patients, rather than to attri-
bute their condition to the in-
firinities of old age."

people they read about in the
Bible. Both were a sturdy, hard
working, God-fearing, uncom-
plaining, agricultural p e o p 1 e.
Just as the Jews loved to study
the Torah the early American
settlers loved religious study.
In the Old Testament the col-
onists read of the lush orchards
and fertile fields in Palestine
which produced fine crops be-
cause of the hard work, dilegent
care, and agriculture knowledge
lavished on them by their Jew-
ish owners and tried to produce
such crops here in America.
Through the hard lean first
years of settlement the Ameri-
can settlers reverently asked
God for help and appreciatively
thanked Him for His kindnesses
just as the Jews they read about
in the Bible had done for many
centurys. In the Bible they also
read of the Jewish agricultural
celebrations, such as, Succoth,
the harvest celebration, and the
spring celebration on the fifteen-
th day of Shvat.
At the end of the year when
the crops were harvested it was
natural that the American
settlers, with their Old Testa-
ment training, should hold a
feast of Thanksgiving to thank
God for His bounty. This train-
ing also made it natural for
them to invite the Indians to
their feast for it has always been
Jewish tradition . that when a
feast is held all who may • be
hungry are invited to eat.
On Thanksgiving Day as Am-
ericans we can be proud of the
hardy early settlers and as Jews
we can be proud of our religious
tradition and Holy Book which
influenced them so.

By Uncle David

Dear Boys and Girls:
Each year, on the last Thurs-
day in November, all Americans
observe Thanksgiving Day. As
you certainly know Thanksgiv-
ing is a day when the dinner
table groans under the load of
good things to eat which are put
upon it. Thanksgiving is a joyous
holiday when we all eat turkey
with all the trimmings and
pumpkin pie and our only re-
grets are that the turkey only
has two drumbsticks and that
our stomachs aren't bigger so
we could eat more of the good
food.
Of course there is no school on
Thanksgiving Day for Thanks-
giving has been a national hol-
iday ever since George Washing-
ton proclaimed -a Thanksgiving
during his first term in office.
In 1861 Abraham Lincoln pro-
claimed the last Thursday in
November as Thanksgiving Day
and Thanksgiving has been cele-
brated on the last Thursday in
November ever since.
Perhaps you don't know that
Thanksgiving Day has a Jewish
significance. The American Pil-
grim fathers were a God-fearing
deeply religious people. These
people had left their _home in
England and come to a newly
discovered and still wild land for
a reason that has been familiar
to Jews throughout the centurys.
They left to escape religious per-
secution.
These American colonists were
thorOughly familiar with, and
loved the book o.f our fore-
fathers, the Old Testament.
From it they learned of the cus-
toms and traditions of the Jews.
The early,American settlers had
a great deal in common with the
