Meet Four Literary Figures
Participating in Book Fair

, .ors will arrive next week-end in
Detroit to participate in the
Jewish Book Fair, presented an-
' n.ually by the Jewish Community
Center and other organizations

The four prominent writers are
.Matirice 'Samuel, author of the
recent best seller "Web of Luci-
fer;" Rabbi Morris N. Kertzer,
who has written "'What Is a
Jew ;" and two writer illustrators
of children's books, Nora Benja-
min -Kubie and fornier Detroit
teen-ager Sharon Ross.
Each of the writers will speak
at the Book Fair, - to be held
Nov. 21 to 23, at the Davison
Jewish Center. They also will
head workshops, autograph
books and meet those who at-
tend the Fair.
Samuel, perhaps the best-
known writer on Jewish sub-
jects today, has been in the
forefront of literary' activity
for a quarter of a century,
during -which he has written,
lectured and liVed in Israel,
Africa, England and Europe.
His recent book, "Level Sun-
light," deals with" the growth of
modern Israel and reveals the
role played in its development
by the late

-magazines.
Nora Kubie, fascinated by
stories of American pioneer-
ing days, traveled to Israel in
1952 to see how fellow-Jews
were leading a similar exis-
tence. The result of her trip
was 'The First Book of Israel,"
an author-illustrated history
of the Jewish people, written
for children, which begins with
Moses, The book contains
varied information on such
subjects as ballet, chess and
'electricity.
An -earlier book, "Joel," is the
story of a Jew who fought in
the American revolution, and
won for its author a special cita-
tion by' the Child_Study Associa-
tion of America.
Teen-ager. Sharon Ross; now a
freshrrian at Ohio. State Univer-
sity, attended Detroit Mumford
High • School whose school em-
blem she designed. She studied
art here at the Jewish Center,
under Leon Makielski.
Over 200 local organizations
are working on the Book Fair,
which. will officially be opened
on -Nov. 21 with a talk by Saniuel
on "JewiSh Themes in English
Literature." A reception in his
honor will follow.
On Sunday afternoon, in
addition to a panel discussion
by the four authors, special
parent a n d programs
are scheduled, with parent
workshops on story-telling and
134ilding of home libraries.
Samuel will extend his discus-
sion to Hebrew and Yiddish
literature on Suilday evening,
while Monday morning and
afternoon will be 'Ladies Day,"
with a special program by teen-
agers on Monday evening. •
Over 500 .book titles. from 35
publishing houses, along with
art objects, children's records
and games, will be- displayed at
the Fair•

Technion Dinner Dec. 7;
Prof. Gomberg, Callaghan

Plans are being formulated by

the annual dinner to be held at
Hotel Statler Dec. 7, with Dr.
Walter C. Lowdermilk, 'eminent
soil conservationist, as principal
speaker.
Leon Kay, Benjamin Wilk and
Max Osnos are co-chairmen of
the dinner cominittee.
The- Detroit' TechniOn:'Society
will meet Tuesday evening at
the Zionist House to. hear ad-
dresses by Prof. Henry J. GOm-
berg, Of the electrical engineer-
ing department of the Univer
sity of Michigan, director of the
Phoenik Project for Atomic Re-
search at Ann Arbor, and J.
Dorsey Callaghan, music critic
of the Detroit Free Press, who
recently visited the Technion at
Haifi, Israel.
