Plan Double Program for Youth
At Annual Center Book Fair

In almost 20 Detroit Jewish
youth groups, youngsters rang-
ing from kindergarten to draft
age are rehearsing plays and
skits, writing book reviews, prac-
ticing songs and preparing de-
bating arguments.
The result of these efforts will
appear at the Jewish Book Fair,
to be held at the Davison Jew-
ish Center, from Nov. 21 to 23.
Other children and teenagers
are painting posters or writing
essays on the topic "My Favorite

Wide Interest in ZOD
Spurs Sale of Tickets
For Balfour Ball

With 15% more workers con-
stituting the Balfour Ball Com-
mittee, ticket sales are heading
into the final week before the
ball with an enthusiasm that
promises to make this the most
successful ball in its 21-year his-
tory, chairmen Harry A. Cohen
and A. C. Lappin have an-
nounced. The ball will be held
Saturday, Nov. 14, at Hotel
statler. •
Several factors are building
toward the success of the ball,
which is the fund-raising event
of the Zionist Organization of
Detyoit, Cohen and Lappin said..
"The 'hit and run' propaganda
directed at Israel in recent
weeks has brought into sharp
focus the role of the Zionist Or-
ganization as an American me-
dium for counteracting this
truly sinister cimpaign againtt
the Jewish state," Cohen said.
UniNiersal interest in paying a
personal visit to Israel, accord-
ing to Lappin, has influenced
many members of the Detroit
community to purchase a ball
ticket, entitling them to parti-
cipate in the award of a round-
trip airline transportation to
Israel!.
The ball's 2f-Year record as
the outstanding social event is
also a major reason why tickets
have been selling at a rapid
-rate, the chairmen agreed. Mu-
sic will be supplied by Phil Bres-
toff's orchestra, with songs by
Dee Parker, television's "Auntie
Dee." There will be the tradi-
tional cocktail lounge adjoining
the main ballroom.
Zionist House, Detroit home of
Zionist activities, is maintained
by proceeds of the ball, which is
also Detroit Jews' medium for
helping support the comprehen-
sive program of the Zionist Or-
.
ganization of America.
Tickets, in denominations of
$10,. $25., $50 and $100, may be
secured at Zionist House, 11345

the Book Fair.
The reason for the flurry of
activity is that this year, for the
first time, the Jewish Book Fair
will include a Special teenagers'
program as well as an expanded
children's program. -
On Nov. 23, teenagers from a
dozen youth groups will present
a literary variety show, browse
through the - Fair's 500 book titles
and wind up the evening with
doughnuts, cider and book talk.
Poster and essay contest winners
will receive awards. The essays,
published in booklet form, will
be distributed to Fair visitors.
Groups who will take part in
the teenage program include:
Center's Northwest group, AJA
and BGGA, Wayne Hillel, United
Jewish High School, Senior Ju-
dea, Councilettes, and members
of youth organizations at Temple
Israel, Bnai Moshe, Adas Sha-
lom, Beth Aaron and Shaarey
Zedek synagogues, and Ever-
green Jewish Community.
Youth leaders will gather on
Nov. 23 for a panel discussion
with teen-aged author, Sharon
Ross, a former Detroiter in her
late teens who is a freshman in
an Ohio college.
The smaller fry will gather
Sunday afternoon for two simul-
taneously given children's pro-
grams, while their parents have
the choice of watching their
kiddies perform, or attending
special parent workshops.
Kiddies from the Jewish Com-
munity Center Juniors, United
Jewish • Folk Schools, playlets;
United Hebrew Schools, a choral
group, and youngsters from the
Sholem Aleichem Institute will
do a song skit.
For parents two workshops on
"How to Tell a Story" and "How
to Build a Home Library" will
be given. Children's writers,
Sharon Ross and Mrs. Nora Ben-.
jamin Kubie, and Rabbi Morris
N. Kertzner will lead the work-
shops.
