Rabbi Moses Lehrman, presi-
dent of the Zionist Organization
of Detroit, this week issued an
appeal, urging community-wide
support of the Balfour Ball, to be
held at the Statler Nov. 14, pro-
ceeds of which help finance
local Zionist educational and
youth activities. In the course
of his appeal, Rabbi - Lehrman
states:
"In the last few 3-ears fol-
lowing the birth of Israel, apathy
began to displace the enthusi-
asm which the Zionist move-
ment elicited from its many ad-
herents. In the minds of many
former enthusiasts, Zionism in
American was reduced to a de-
funct and unessential battalion,
stripped of its usefulness and
consigned to a 'has been,' with
its 'Mission Completed.'
"In vain did our leadership
warn the American Jewish com-
munity of the dangers which
still beset the new born state,
of the need for alertness and of

full chance to mature and de-
velop.
"It is regretful and unfor-
tunate that conviction of the in-
dispensable role of the Zionist
organization on the battlefront
of moral wrestling had to come
so soon.
"At this hour, our movement
finds itself in the position of
battling the international in-
justices and political games of
which Israel has become a vic-
tim and scapegoat. Like the
prophet of antiquity, the Zionist
Organization of America is com-
pelled to sound the clarion call
of moral awareness in an hour
when political issues becloud
the principles of democracy to
which our country stands dedi-
cated.
"The Balfour Ball emerges
from its fund raising or social
functions and assumes the sym-
bol of instrumentality for demon-
strating our faith in the prin-
