Dr. Atkinson Blames
Egypt for Prolonging
Arab Refugee Issue

Dr. Henry A. Atkinson, head
of the Church Peace Union and I
one of the leaders in the Ameri-
can Christian Palestine Commit-
tee, in a letter to Max Krell of
18675 Washburn, Detroit, ex-
pressed the view that Egypt is
prolonging the Arab refugee
problem in ordef to hold it as a
weapon against Israel.
Dr. Atkinson and Mr. Krell
met on their reecnt visit in
Israel. Upon his return home,
Dr. Atkinson wrote to Mr. Krell:
"The only way, it seems to
me, that there can be peace in
the Near East is thrOugh the
United Nations forcing through
a move that will settle the ques-
tions that are outstanding and
drawing up a peace treaty to
be signed by Israel and all her
neighbors. It is too bad to al-
' low the ragged armistice to con-
tinue any longer. I was told by
people who know, and who have
the facts, that Egypt is behind
the bad situation in the refugee
camps. The rumor is that she
is looking forward to another
`round' of war with Israel and
wants the condition of the re-
fugees, among other things, to
be a pretext for beginning a new

believe that there i Con Sider-
able truth in this stAteinent."
1, While in Jerusalem, Dr. At-
kinson expressed the view that
Christian clergy favor the inter-
nationalization . of Holy Places
in Jerusalem. He pointed out
that the Catholic clergy who re-
mained loyal members of the
Christian Palestine Committee
find themselves 'in a difficult
position over the Jerusalem is-
sue. He predicted "endless- trou-
ble between sects" if religious
power groups within the UN
forced their authority on the
Jerusalem matter.
In his letter to Mr. Krell, Dr.
Atkinson also made this point:
"After our return from Israel
we made a trip through the
South of France, where the
Point Four Program is being
carried on in an excellent wary.
The Rhone River is furnishing
water and, although it covers a
lesser area, it is patterned afte
the TVA undertaking here in
the South. A large area through
the South of France has always
been known as the "desert." I
was very pleased with what tie
have done. However, in Israel
and some of the other countries
there is an uneasiness or fear
that our security measures
which are costing so Much will
make it impossible for us to con-
tinue to help in the kind of
work that is being done in
Southern France."
