ciples," he said.

should be adhered to. He urged
wide support for the UN tech-
nical aid program as means of
bringing peace and stability to
the world and thereby to fore-
stall the advances that may be
made by Communism.

He referred to Israel as "the
greatest experiment in mod-
ern times" and declared that
gifts and bonds help create
self-help in Israel.

Describing the vast difference
between the squalor of the ref-
ugees' life in Arab countries and
the progress in Israel, Mr. _Lie
pointed out that Israel has
taken in 80,000 oppressed Jews
from Iraq, 20,000 from Egypt
and ,many from other Arab
countries and declar.ed that "Is
rael has handled this important
problem well."
Among the important person-
alities at the dinner were the
Norwegian Consul, William Hen- .
ry Caswell; .Miss Jane Lovejoy,
president of the Board of Edu-
cation; Congressman Charles E.
Oakma,n, Frank X. Martel, Dr.
Laura Osborn of the UN Asso-
ciation and others.

Firm action by the United
Nations members, in support of
the Palestine partition decision,
could have prevented the Arab-
Jewish war, Trygve Lie, former
UN Secretary-Gera1,4told a dis-
tinguished gathering of Chris-
tians and Jews, at the Israel
bond dinner at Hotel i6tatler,
Sunday night.

Mr. Lie, at a press confer-
ence that preceded the din-
ner, said he had the feeling
that the present critical situa-
tion is not as serious as some
people think it is. He empha-
sized that Israel is a child of
the United . Nations, that it
exists as an entity and that
it will survive.

Approximately $130,000 worth
of Israel bonds were bought at
the dinner by the 450 people in
attendance. The appeal for
bond purchases was made by
Rabbi Isidore Breslau of Wash-
ington, Louis Berry, Bob Hall
and Joseph Holtzman.
Mr. Lie delivered his address
after receiving a Scroll and
Proclamation from Mayor Albert
E. Cobo, signifying the setting
of that day as Trygve Lie Day in
Detroit, and the Key to the City.
In comment upon the latter,
Mr. Lie said "if the key will
open the door to Moscow, I'll be
very happy."
In an impressive brief address
welcoming Mr. Lie, U. S. Senator
Homer Ferguson acclaimed the
great cause of the United Na-
tions. He compared the "totali-
tarianism that has taken its toll
of free nations" with "our own
desire for freedom and liberty,"
and praised the UN which has
made it possible for us to wit-
ness "a nation born in Israel."

"You are buying bonds in
freedom to help develop a
young state," Senator Fergu-
son commended the audience.
"We hope the success of Israel
will be great, and even great-
er than anticipated. If we will
keep our shoulders to the
wheel and help the small na-
tions, we can hold out the
hope that there will be free-
dom for all."

In his address, Mayor Cabo

also commended the purchasing
of bonds and stated that "the
demonstration tonight is in
keeping with what our people
do to achieve a better way of
life."

Mr. Lie said he was im-
pressed by the display of in-
terest in the bond drive. "I
am glad to see the response to
the call for investments in
Israel and am excited to see
how people are giving," he
stated. "When you are giving,
when you are buying bonds,

you are doing the right thing
as human beings, as Ameri-
cans, as Jews."
Describing the background of
his interest in the establish-
ment of Israel, Mr. Lie recalled
that as a boy he was puzzled
over the law of 1814 in this
country's constitution prohibit-
ing the settlement of Jews in
Norway. That law was repealed
in 1851 and there has been no
discrimination since, he pointed
out, until the arrival of the
