Superintendent, United Hebrew Schools There has been a phenomen- al increase in the attendance, both in the general public schools as well as in our He- brew schools. In fact, the in- crease of attendance in the Ile- brew schools is proportionately greater than that of the public schools. While in the public schools the increase generally ranged from three to seven per cent, in the Hebrew Schools the increase reached in some places as 1.1. i g- 11 as 40 and more per cent. The reason for the increase in the public schools is obvi- ous. During they second World War the tension, B. Iaa.acs restlessness, a n d insecurity which prevailed throughout the country prevented young men and women from•building homes and raising families, but as soon as that turbulent period termin- ated there was a noticeable up- swing in the birth rate. Hence, the larger attendance in the schools, particularly on a lower level, that is in the nurseries, kindergarten, and the first two grades. This same cause naturally ap- plies to the increase in attend- ance of the Hebrew schools, but the factors that brought about the added increase are of a more complex nature. I shall point out two of them: (1) We have fall- en heir to our great heritage. (2) The establishment of the State of Israel. (1) The annihiliation of six million Jews in Eastern and Western Europe and with them the destruction of the great Jewish educational centers, have placed in the hands of the American Jewry a responsibility which they feel they cannot - and must not shirk. "The Eternity of Israel canont fail." It must continue. The Shekhinah, the Divine Presence, according to the Rabbis follows us every- where, and when the Shenkhi- nah was driven out of the heart of 'Europe, it took refuge in our own midst. The Jews of the free democracies and especially those of the U.S.A. feel that it is they who must continue weaving the golden thread. They feel that Torah which was given to us by Moses on Mt. Sinai and then handed down from generation to generation must be fostered by us and handed down to suc- ceeding generations. (2) The establishment of the State of Israel is wielding a great and 'wholesome influence upon the Jews of the diaspora. In spite of the many complaints and criticisms with which tour- ists returned from Israel, every.; body agrees that the school sys- tem of Israel is second to none. A little over two years ago, I had the rare pleasure and pri- vilege of visiting Israel and whenever, for any reasons at all, THE YEAR ... 5714 THE EVENT...David Rosner, owner-director, presents r stomp HOTEL-POOL-CABANAS THE ONLY NEW HOTEL In MIAMI BEACH in the TREASURED TRADITION of JEWISH ORTHODOXY ceettt-'' oc h y‘ • Dietary laws strictly observed • Highest quality food in Rosner manner • Pool, beach, cabanas, sun decks Dairy snack bar at poolside • Night Club-dancing, entertainment • Centrally air conditioned & heated school, any school, and was im- mediately relieved of that de- pressive feeling. The staff, the supervision, the textbooks, the classroom management, every- thing is on a par with the best we have.in the United States. In fact, the schools in the rural districts, the Kibutzim, no mat- ter how small are far superior to that which we see in our ru- ral districts. I spent several days in the Kibutz Ramat Yochanan. It is a Kibutz of about 500 souls. 'I found high class teachers, ex- cellent supervision, and an at- mosphere not only of learning, but of learning through play and pleasure, an experience we do not find in our small towns and villages. There is no doubt that the "light of the Torah" which emanates from Israel is having an inspirational effect upon our Jewish parents here in America. There is, however, one defect which I find, and that is the short duration of our children in the Hebrew schools. It is true, as I mentioned, there is a desire even an urge on the part of the parents to send their children to the Hebrew schools. There is, I would say, a spark, but this spark must be fanned to a flame Parents do send their children to the Hebrew schools but their education usually ends - with their Bar Mitzvah or at best, with the graduation of the ele- mentary school. If we want to perpetuate Judaism, if we are really in earnest in our desire to be heirs to that great heritage, and be partners with our Is- raeli brethren in the fostering of Jewish education, we must give our children not only a smattering of knowledge but a good sound Jewish education.
