IF YOU SHOULD HAPPEN to
see a lass downtown wearing
dark glasses in the pitch black-
ness of night, it's probably pub-
licity gal Martha Glaser . . .
back in the ol' home town to
spread the word about the BIG-
GEST SHOW OF '53, coming to
Olympia, Saturday . . ..with Nat
"King" Cole, Sarah Vaughan,
Ralph Marterie anci his "Down
Beat" orchestra, Illinois Jac-
civet, dancer Peg Leg Bates,
mimic George Kirby and Helen
and Howard, comedy dance
team . . . Although a Detroiter,
Martha has been working in
New York and traveling the
country wide telling the folks
of the many top-notch shows
coming to their town . . . and
dark glasses or not, you can be
sure she'll put you in the lime-
light of what's going on!

JOE EDELMAN'S four - year-
old son, Aaron, got the idea
that when a flock of pigeons
congregate on the street, side-
walk or lawn, they are cele-
brating a birthday party . .
Anyhow, putting his idea into
action, little Aaron never passes
a flocki of pigeons these days
but what he stops and, in a
serious and business-like man-
ner sings a verse of "Happy
B i r t h d a y" to his feathered
friends.

Four Adult Groups
Of Jewish Center
Begin. Activities

Several adult groups of the
Jewish Community Center have
already begun meeting or will
open their seasons in the coming
week. Among them are the
Speakers Club, Book Forum,
Square Dance Group and Pho-
tography Club.
The Speakers Club, an organ-
ization of single men and women
interested in public speaking and
public affairs, will open its sea-
! son at 9 p.m., Saturday, at the
Davison Center. Lou Small,
president, invited all interested
communityites to hear Profes-
sors George L. Hinds and Eu-
gene H. Bahn, of Wayne Uni-
versity's speech department.
Dr. Hinds, director of special
adult training programs in
speech, will introduce a 10-week
course on public speaking and
group leadership, under auspices
of the Speakers Club, beginning
Oct. 31, at the Davison Center,
as part of the Center Adult In-
stitute.
Mrs. Joshua S. Sperka will re-
view Sholem Aleichem's "Motel"
at a meeting of the Book Forum
on Monday evening, at the
Woodward Center. A departure
from regular procedure this year
will be sponsorship of a recorded
international folk music pro-
gram, directed by Rudolph Ef-
ram, leader of the Adult Insti-
tute course, "Getting More Out
of Music."
Under the guidance of Leo
Wolfe, health education instruc-
tor at MacCulloch School, the
Square Dance Group will meet
Wednesday e v e n'i n g, in the
Woodward Center. Ordinarily,'
the group meets on Tuesday, at
the D. W. Simons Branch where
the Nov. 10 meeting and subse-
quent get-togethers will be held.
The Photography Clinic, a
course of the Adult Institute
teaching the techniques of
shooting black and white stills,
stereo and color home movies
has already begun, under the
direction of Jack Kaufman, pro-
fessional photographer. The
overflow from the course has
led to the formation of a Pho-
tography Club, under the guid-
ance of Dick Burns, Center pho-
tographic instructor.
For information on any of the
above groups and how you may
join, contact Dr. Harry Lerner,
director of adult activities of
the Center, TR. 5-8450.

FROM HOLLYOOD comes the
story of a fellow-producer who
persuaded Sam Goldwyn to at-
tend a preview of a blood-and-
thunder picture, and at its con-
clusion enthused, "Isn't that a
real, old-fashioned swashbuckler
for you?" . . . Goldwyn wisely
pointed out, "The trouble is, it
buckles where it should swash!"
. . Also one about the day.
Goldwyn asked Moss Hart how
he was progressing with his
script on the life of Hans Chris-
tian Andersen . . . "If you don't
like the job I've done," .pro-
claimed Moss earnestly, "I will
emulate Vet Gogh, cut off my

ear, and present it to you." .. .
"My boy," said Goldwyn, "in my
desk I've got a whole drawer
full of ears. All -I ask from you
is a good box-office script."
