which group can bring in the
most new members.
According to Charlotte Rosen,
Department of Michigan vice-
president, membership is open
to wives and sisters of any Jew-
ish veteran. The purpose of the
organization primarily is to help
all needy veterans and their
families, a program carried out
without regard to race, creed or
color, Mrs. Rosen added.

The idea of a citizen of the
Jewish faith and race becoming
Mayor of New York has been
talked about for many years
and the thought goes back to !
the time at the beginning of the'
century when Nathan Straus, !
Sr., a leader in the Democratic
party, was boomed for the office.
Mr. Straus was close to the out-
standing public figures of the
time and William Randolph
Hearst, the rising liberal news-
paper magnate of that$
time, his intimate friend, I
rising as a newspaper magnate, i
would have backed him for the
high post, if he did not want I
the nomination himself, which
at a later time he received. The

Actually only Judge Jonah J.
Goldstein made the race for this
office and that was in 1946 when
with all his ability, record of
service to Jewry and fine collec-
tion of Jewish anecdotes, he ran
and lost against W i lliam
O'Dwyer. Now in the three
