RYGVE LIE TO RECEIVE I(ERT TO CITY

Governor Joins in
Honoring UN

(war Proclaims
UN Week

TRYGVE

I n recognition of the fact that the
'United Nations has "proved to be an
effective instrument for the world's
free nations in their tireless efforts
toward the realization of world
peace," Mayor Albert E. Cobo has
proclaimed the week from Wednes-
day, October 21 to Tuesday, October
27 as "United -Nations Week." Also,
he has set aside Sunday, October 25
as "Trygve`Lie Day," because on that
date Mr. Lie will be in Detroit to
speak at an Israel Bond Dinner in his
honor, at the Statler Hotel.

Following the lead of the City of De-
troit, Governor G. Mennen Williams
has issued a Proclamation in which
he lauds the UN as having cham-
pioned the right to existence of new
nations, such as the State of Israel.
Naming the week from October 21st
till October 27th "United Nations
Week," and Sunday, October 25th
"Trygve Lie Day" the Governor
urged all citizens of the State of
Michigan to "take part in any func-
tions which, during said period, might -
be organized within this State in re-
gard to the work of the UN."
The Governor's Proclamation reads
as follows:

LIE'S

CAREER

. Born near Oslo in 1896, Trygve Lie's 'Career has been colorful and exciting.
He likes talking of his early youth in Oslo where, as the son of a hard-working
boardinghouse keeper, he counted among his daily tasks reading the daily paper
aloud to a roomful of boarders of various nationalities! Or of the days in which
he studied law at Oslo University Law School, and became the official lawyer
of Norway's Labor Movement.

SERVES NORWAY IN MINISTER POSTS

In 1935, less than 40 years old, he became Minister of Justice of -his coun-
try, and subsequently filled the post pf Minister of Commerce. Being fully aware
of the great dangers that threatened Norway during the late thirties, he ac-
cumulated large supplies of foodstuffs, and had them cached in ships and in
remote fjords so that the country was prepared for all eventualities. In 1940 the
Nazi invasion came; immediately Trygve Lie issued an order to all Norwegian
skippers at sea to take their ships to Allied ports, thus placing a huge mer-
cantile fleet at the disposal of the Allied armies.

Following a close escape from his occupied homeland, Trygve Lie acted as
Foreign Minister in the Norwegian Government-in-exile, established in London,
and in this capacity met with President Franklin D. Roosevelt on several oc-
casions.

When the war was over, Trygve Lie was acclaimed for his clear, level-headed
thinking, for . his important share in Norway's contribution to the Allied war
effort, and for his astuteness in handling the difficult position of a small nation
located close to the borders of Soviet Russia.

EARLY LINK WITH UNITED NATIONS

Here follows the complete text of
Mayor Cobo's Proclamation :

Mr. Lie was associated with the United Nations from its earliest days. He
headed the Norwegian delegation to San Francisco, in 1945, where the UN Char-
ter was written and solemnly signed by the founding members. In fact, it was
Trygve Lie who presided over a Committee which drafted the provisions in the
Charter for a Security Council. In the following year he was a delegate of Norway
