Rabbi Jacob Segal introducing
Dr. Walton E. Cole, from the
First Congregational Church, as
main speaker, and Rev. Carlyle

Church, and Philip W. Sarles,
minister of Mayflower Congre-

RABBI JULIUS WEINBERG,
formerly of the Jewish Com-
munity Council,- used to tell the
story of the rabbi who had the
reputation of delivering over-
long sermons . . . One day he
appeared at the synagogue with
his face badly cut, and he ex-
plained to the shammos, who
asked about his injuries, that
while he was shaving he con-
centrated so much on his ser-
mon that he had cut his face
. . Said the shammos, who had
had ample experience with the
rabbi's oratory, "Next time, rab-
bi, better you should concen-
trate on your shaving—and cut
the sermon!"

'Round the Clock" fashions
proved a real bell-ringer as far
as successful show business is
concerned in Detroit. The Israel
Bond Women's fast-moving re-
vue...in the Scottish Rite Cathe-
dral of Masonic Temple drew a
bear-capacity throng of women
who purchased a total of $160,-
000 in Israel bonds, as admission
to the Oct. 6 event.
Displaying a bevy of beautiful
models • in original creations, the
three-act program ran the gam-
ut of designers. S. Andrew Car-
dinal. wat in charge of gowns,
while the luxurious fur pieces
were supplied by Furs by Robert.
Settings of the French Directoire
Period were constructed by Wal-
lace J. Newton.
The fashion revue, under the
able co-chairmanship of Mrs.
Milton Mahler and Mrs. Bernard
Osnos, featured the Broadway
singing actress, Dorothy Sarnoff.
Another attraction was the ap-
pearance of Miss Rachel Za-•
bari, visiting member of the Is-
raeli Knesset. Baritone Manny
Holtzer added a masculine touch
to the all-female show.
At brunch and press confer-
ence in honor of the Misses Sar-
noff and Zabari, Mrs. Robert
Drews, publicity chairman, pre-
sented Citations of Honor to rep-
resentatives of the press for their
cooperation in publicizing the
Israel bond show. The awards
were acknowledged by the De-.

which was a recent topic for an
article in Time Magazine . . .
"34 Million Fatties" being the
heading ... It read, "Across the
U. S. last week, more people
than ever were bulging with ex-
cess fat—and ready to admit it.
Forty-five percent of the women
said so in a Gallup poll, 25% of
the men. (Not that men are
really slimmer, say doctors; they
are just slower to face the fat
facts.) By their own say-so, the
overweight add up to a whop-
ping 34 million figure which has
sometimes been accepted as a
rough estimate by life insurance
companies. Moreover, part 1 y
from vanity ("How will I look
in a bathing suit this sum-
mer?"), partly from the reiter-
ated warning that excess pound-
age shortens life, more Ameri-
cans than ever are struggling
to reduce.

"AT THE RANCH OUTSIDE
Phoenix last week, Elizabeth
Arden's carriage-trade custom-
ers were getting a full course of
b e a u t y treatments, including
slimming, for $500 a week. At
Kiowa Lodge, southeast of Los
Angeles, an ex-football player
(Michigan State) named Sam
Dictor was offering a reducing
course for the jitney trade at
$80 a week. The program began
with a glass. of hot water and
lemon juice served in bed. Then
the inmates jumped into sweat
suits emblazoned "Kiowa," and
began a rugged, day-long rou-
tine of calisthenics,. swimming,
games and "passive exercise"
with reducing gadgets, punctu-
ated by healthful meals with
low calorie counts (800 to 1,000
a day). Actually, all the fresh
air and activity made it harder
for the women to control their
appetites. And Director Dictor
was an uninspiring 220 himself.
But the women loved it and lost
weight anyway."
