$65,000 In Bonds

Over 1,000 persons packed the audi-
torium at Adas Shalom Synagogue, 7045
Curtis, to hear former United States
Vice-President Alben W. Barkley give a
talk en Israel at the close of morning
Sukkut services on October 1. Hundreds
of those attending purchased a,- total
amount of $65,000 in Israel Independ-
ence Bonds as a result of the "Veep's"
address.
Nathan R. Epstein, executive officer
of the Keystone Oil Refining Company,
was chairman of the arrangements
committee. Rabbi Jacob E: Segal, spiri-
tual leader of the synagogue, officially
greeted Barkley upon his arrival in the
city. While in Detroit, Barkley was the
house guest of Manny Lax, president of
the Ades Shalom Congregation,
Comparing, the economic situation of
Israel with the early stages in the de-
velopment of this country, Barkley said
that the United States had to depend
heavily upon foreign loans to establish
a foothold in the West.
"No one questioned the lending of

money to the. U. S. in 1776. Why, then,
should there be any hestitancy in pur-
chasing Bonds for Israel, a democratic
nation built in.this country's image," he
said.
Long a key leader of the national ad-
ministration, even before his 'Vice-
Presidency in 1948, Barkley advised the
late President Roosevelt in his relations
with Congress and spearheaded the
passage of welfare measures and perma-
- nent social legislation.
Throughout his forty-year career in
public life, Mr. Barkley has been an in-
defatigable partisan of all Major efforts
to improve the living conditions of the
underprivileged and oppressed peoples_ of
the world. Both as a member of the U. S.
Senate and as America's Vice-President,
he has been a 'leading exponent of
American frienship for the State of
Israel.
