DANNY RASKIN and GROUCH() MARX
BEING WITH Groucho Marx,
last week, in his suite at Hotel
Sheraton-Cadillac, proved one
thing ... that he's great on his
(He
weekly television show .
was in Detroit for three days
touring automobile plants . . 3
Watching him on the TV screen
and talking to him in person
was as though two different per-
sonalities were involved . .
Groucho was not the jocular,
warm type of person we expect-
ed to be greeted by .. but, in-
stead, his cold, serious, non-act-
ing attitude gave indication that
he was a man seemingly tired
of people making a fuss about
him wherever he goes and what-
ever he does, while retaining
the complacency of someone
who has made his niche in life
and doesn't care anymore what
his public thinks of him . . .
even to the extent of using
sarcasm at will because it has
been defined, as wit by critics
and writers . . . He doesn't know
if he likes Detroit because "I
haven't bothered to get a good
look at it. But it does seem sort
of odd that a city with such a
large population doesn't even
have one stage presentation."
Grouch() stayed in his hotel suite
Most of the three days he was
in Detroit . . . and when told
about a famous orchestra leader
who was in town, he remarked
that the last band he i'emembers
was John Phillip Souza . . . He's
a devoted Brooklyn Dodger fan
and pulled for them to win the
World Series . • "If you're root-
ing for the Yanks, you might as
well root for Hitler!" he ex-
claimed.
*
*
GROUCHO DOESN'T like to
talk about his family or person-
al life because he doesn't feel
that it belongs to the public . .
which is a far cry from the gen-
eral attitude of show people who
know that their business is ev-
erybody's business . . . "I'm not
an automobile salesman," he
said, "I'm an entertainer. I get
the audience. It's up to the sales
force to sell the car."
0
ALL THROUGH THE • inter-
view, it was the serious side of
Grouch() Marx that played the
constant role ... Never smiling
Once, he sat stone-faced for al-
most an hour, talking in a low
pitched, monotone-like voice .
Minus the cigar that has done
Much in bringing him the fame
that he enjoys .... "I'm a Jew
and I'm proud of it, but I don't
d r floe it on my show,"
Grouch() explained • . trying to
put across his disapproval of
Jewish comedians . . . or, for
that matter, his utter disdain for
comics who used their family or
religion of any faith to gain an
audience .. , His democratic at-
titude about all races, creeds and
religions was brought out in his
obvious diSgust of any type of
!thscri mination..
REMINISCING A BIT, Groucho
remembered playing the old
Temple Theater and appearing
at the Cass Theater ... and said
he was expecting to appear in
one more motion picture, to be
called "The Life of the Marx
Brothers." . . . Other than that,
his future will be devoted to
television and personal appear-
ances . . . Photographer Jack
Bigelman and Jimmy Rachleff,
"Detroit's own Groucho," accom-
panied us to the interview, and
afterwards wondered how a per-
son can be so different from the
once "Marx Maniac" . . Jack
said he was going to 'California
soon, to live, and asked if he
knew his brother, Dr. Leo Bigel-
man . . . Groucho said he had
heard of him, and asked, "Is
that the reason you're going to
live in California? That's a pret-
ty expensive way to get free
surgery!" . . . Jimmy asked him
if he knew the Borden Twins, a
sister comedy singing act, and
Groucho replied, "Oh, you mean
the milk company?" ... Groucho
seemed to resent Jimmy offering
him a cigar, and if the actor
had any around he sure didn't
let any of us know it!
* * *
GROUCHO IS SAID to net
over $4000 a week these days
with his radio and television
chores, but there was a time
when all four Marx Brothers to-
gether had a difficult job keep-
ing the wolf away from the door
... He would rather forget those
times and talk about anything
except when they traveled from
one town to another and their
mother, Minnie Marx, dressed
them up in short pants and
Buster Brown collars so they
could ride for half fare.
* * *
ALL IN ALL, it would appear
that Julius "Groucho" Marx was
either a very tired gent . . . or
the greatest exponent of the
split personality that we have
ever met!
