A city-wide high school pro-
gram known as "kick-off" and
sponsored by the Intra-Metro-
politan Student Sportsmanship
Council (IMSSC), was held at
Northwestern High last month
for the purpose of promoting
better sportsmanship in city
high schools.
Jerry Bernstein, president of
Central's Sportsmanship Coun-
cil, represented the school along
with Carolyn Scott, Evelyn Sip-
orin and Harriet Sosnick, as
IMSSC representatives; Norma
Porter and Barbara Bandler as
cheerleaders; Janie Rosenzweig
and Phil Stone as the outstand-
ing 12Bs; Beverly Goldstein and
Shel Kantor as 12As; Harriet
Chodoroff, acting president of
the Student Council; Elaine
Madorsky and Dennis Freeman,
representatives of the school
paper; Faith Greenbaum, Bob
Brent and Mel Lester represent-
ing the school's athletic teams.
The first meeting of the
newly elected officers and board
of directors of the Par e n t
Faculty Council was held at the
home of new president, Albert
Green. The board consists of
parents of students in all grades.
Meetings for the general mem-
bership will be held the second
Wednesday of every month. The
first meeting is scheduled for
8 p.m., Wednesday, October 14,
in the school auditorium. Par-
r e n t s of all students who
achieved the honor roll in June
will be honored.
A barn dance, "The Autumn
Shuffle," first twelfth grade .af-
fair of the year, will be held
from 8:30 p.m. to 12 midnight,
today in the Central g y m.
Highlighting the evening will be
the appearance of a well-known
disc-jockey. Tickets- m a y be
purchased at the door or at the
booths in the hallways. The
dance is stag or drag.

The first edition of the Mum-
ford Mercury was on the stands
last week thanks to the work
of its new editors. They are Russ
Palmer, editor-in-chief; Mickey
Luckoff and Sandra Vineberg,
news editors; Diane Meisner
and Elihu Burkow, feature edi-
tors; Bruce Parker and Richard
Gerber, sports editors; Connie
Sarason and Dorothy Kahl, copy
editors; Linda Lee and Carolyn
Israel, opinion editors; Ken
Weinburger, magazine layout
editor; J. D. Gottlieb, magazine
copy editor.
After a terrific fight, Mum-
ford lost its football game last
week to Denby, always a power
in the East Side division, by the
score of 7 to 0.
All young ladies, 13 to 17, are
invited to attend the first meet-
ing of Councilettes, to be held at
1:30 p.m., Sunday, at Beth
Aaron Synagogue?
Saturday night was a big one,
which saw the installation of
officers for both Rose Chapter,
AZA, and Demolay. Both were
in the form of dances.

Joan Schneider, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John H. Schneider,
of Woodingham Dr., was honor-
ed at a sweet sixteen dinner
party at the Elmwood Casino
on Oct. 2. Space prevents listing
all 30 of the guests who attend-
ed, but suffice to say, "All had a
terrific time."
Center Adult Institute to Feature
50 Activities in Informal Sessions
An adult institute, offering a
varied program of informal
courses, hobby groups, social
clubs and cultural events is an-
nounced by the department of
adult services of the Jewish
Community Center.
Registration for approximately
50 different activities of the In-
stitute begins' Thursday, at the
Woodward Center, Davison
Branch, D. W. Simons Branch
and Twelfth Street Council.
Most activities will begin the
last week of October or the first
week of November, and will be
held at the Woodward, Davison
and Simons buildings.
Outstanding teachers and
leaders have been secured for
this adult program, including
Dr. Richard Kerckhoff, Merrill
Palmer School; Dr. William Wat-
tenberg, associate professor of
educational psychology and so-
ciology at Wayne University;
Samuel Kellman, senior clinical
psychologist, Harper Hospital,
Ben Glicker. and Sam Bernstein.
The program is under the
supervision of Dr. Harry H. Ler-
ner, supervisor of adult services
for the Center.
Of interest to mothers is a
"Ladies D a y Out," program
which will feature a group of
activities at the Davison Branch

granted by banks increased from
IL 161,300,000 to IL 173,500,000
during March to June of this
year.
The percentage received by

For Beauty Laurels
A 17-year-old senior at Cen-
tral High. School will represent
the 17th District Young Demo-
crats in a beauty contest Sun-
day, in Lansing,
Mich.

mittee meeting
of the Young
Democrats of
Michigan, at
which time Miss

with entries from all over the
state to determine Miss Young
Democrat, who will reign over
the state convention Oct. 24, in
Detroit.
Maureen currently is president
of Al Jolson Chapter of Bnai
Brith Girls and is secretary of
the Michigan Region of BBG.
Last summer, she was named
sweetheart of Alpha Epsilon Pi
fraternity on the Michigan State
College campus, and was enter-
ed in the national contest for
AEP sweetheart.
Miss Pritz lives with her moth-
er at 18469 Ardmore.
Big things have been going on
around Royal Oak High. The
first all-school party was held
last Friday, and consisted of
swimming meets, dancing and
ping pong. Music was furnished
by the high school dance band,
Three Sharps and a Flat, and
was a big hit.
The first edition of the R. 0.
High paper, "The Acorn" was
published last week. One of the
most active and enthusiastic
girls on the paper is Sheryl Hu-
bar, who is co-copy editor and
is in charge of sports coverage
for the yearbook.
Tryouts for the swimming
team this week attracted a large
turnout of girls among them be-
ing top swimmers Sue Fishman
and Linda Kayes.
Some of the new students en-.
rolled in the high school this
year are Linda Kayes, Rose-El
len Cohen, Les Lunsky, Kenny
Modell, Ronnie Steinberg, Mar-
cia Miller and Joan Karatz. A
number of these kids are new-
corners to S. 0. C., and others
are attending their first year in
high school.
