Mr. Viertel made his mark on the German and Austrian theater during the 1920s will expression- istic performances of Shakes- peare and Ibsen and the first productions in German of some of Eugene O'Neill's best known plays. In 1934 he fled the Nazis and.went to Britain, from where he came to the United States, returning to Europe after the war.
