family man - named, Andrija
Artukovic is seeking a perma-
nent home Ion his family in the
United States. His case is of
interest to Jews because he has
a desire to kill the Jewish fam-
ilies in the United States in the
same manner that he worked
with Adolf Hitler to exterminate
the Jews in Croatia during
World War II. - -
Mr. Artukovic is now living
with his family in Los Angeles..
He is having difficulties with
the U. S. immigration authori-
ties owing to a suit by the gov-
ernment of Yugoslavia for his
extradition to that country as a
major war crimirial.. Mr. Artu=
kovic was designated by the
British -government as a Nazi
was criminal. Other problems of
his include identification by the
World Jewish Congress which
offered evidence and insisted-his
Crimes were so heinous that he
must be brought to' trial.
Assistance has -been ,extended
to Mr. Artukovic by Rep. James
B. Utt, a California Republican.
Rep. Utt quietly introduced a
"private bill" at the close of
Congress. The bill would legal-
ize the presence here of Mrs.
Artukovic and the children. If
the bill is passed another plea
may be' anticipated. Wouldn't
any real American consider it
an act of barbarity to separate
a loving father from his wife
and kids?
The anguish involved in the
enforced separation of fami-
lies is familiar to Mr. Artu-
kovic. He was confronted with -
this factor when he supervised
the deportation and extermi-
nation of Jewish children in
Croatia. The main considera-
tion to which Mr. Artukovic
now claims to have devoted
himself was the taking of- ef-
fective measures against com-
munists. Some of the "com-
munists" listed on the con-

kets in Turkey.
Included in the transports was
a follow-up con signment of
knives. 'A test cargo of knives
had been sent a few months pre-
viously. The export of this new
Israeli product to Turkey is ex-
pected to become a regular item
A plant for the manufacture
of knives and similar articles
was established by Selel Boneh,
one of the country's largest co-
operative enterprises, jointly
with an English investor.

1948, and was admitted as a
visitor. His temporary visa was
extended three time while Some
of his victims experienced dif-!
ficulties getting in under refu--
gee quotas. To escape extradi-
tion, Mr. Artukovic applied - for
status as a "refugee from com-
munism." The Yugoslavian gov-:
ernment was advised by the
State Department that it could
have Mr: Artukovic extradited
under an America n-Serbian
treaty of 1901. Former Secretary
Of State Dean Acheson certified
this treaty as "presently in
force" for the "mutual extradi -
tion of fugitives from justice."
However, Federal Judge- Peirson
M. :Hall ruled in Los Angeles
that Mr. Artukovic should be
freed because he considered the
treaty not to be valid. This oc-
curred after the judge said he
was impressed with Artukovic's
"sincerity and with his hon-
estly."
Mr. ArtukoVic's lawyer main-
tained that his client was a vic-
tim of communist propaganda.
Meanwhile, extradition proceed- -
ings were -. denounced as "out-
rageous" by the Rev.- Stephen
Lackovic, a former secretary of
Archbishop Stepinac. Father
Lackovic and other priests
praised Mr. Artukovic's char-
acter. The Rev. Robert Ross, of
Westminster, Calif., told the
court that Mr. Artukovic would
make an American citizen "of
whom we would all be justly
proud."
Jewish refugees from Yugo-
slavia were astounded • when
U. S. newspapers and some im-
portant columnists rushed to
Artukovic's defense. A few non-.-
Jewish Americans, however,
had heard the name "Artukovic"
before. John J. Knezevich, a
C a l i f ornia Republican com-
mitteeman, c omm a nded the
Balkan section of the U.
Army and Navy Joint Intelli-
gence Collection Agency during
World War II. He said he had
personal knowledge of Mr. Artu-
kovic's atrocities. Mr. Knezevich
noted that "several people" told
him that Mr. Artukovic was an
enemy of communism and
should be left alone. The former
intelligence commander replied:
`Well, damn it, Hitler, Goering,
Himmler, Mussolini and the rest
of the Nazi league were also
enemies of communism, but they
werealso enemies of our coun-
try:"

centration camp orders he
signed were Jewish children
under one year of age.
Speeches by Mr. Artukovic,
quoted in Nazi newspapers, in-
dicate that he felt Jews and
communists to be one and - the
same. His views on world affairs
are again in demand. Mr. Artu-
kovic is seeking to serve his
adopted larid just as he served
the Nazi puppet state of Croatia.
As an expert on the Menace of
communism, he has addressed
the Optimist, Kiwanis, a n d
Knights of Columbus .clubs of
Los Angeles. At the KiWanis ap-
pearance he was applauded by
the Los Angeles mayor.
As minister of justice of Croa-
tia, installed under orders from
Berlin, Mr. Artukovic zealously
implemented the S.S. extermi-
nation Program: A man of in-
itiative, Mr. Artukovic acted on
his own authcirity on June 4,
1941, to--anticipate the adminis-
trative problems of Heinrich
Himmier. On that date Mr.
Artukovic signed' an order which
deprived JeWs of their property
and compelled them to wear a
yellow badge with the letter "Z"
(for "Zidow" or Jew). Later he
bragged that he outstripped Mr.
Hiner- in the speed with which
Croatian police squads solved
"the Jewish problem."
Jews who survived reported
that Mr. Artukovic personally
ordered the execution of rab-
bis, cantors, and talmud torah'
teachers. One survivor testi-
fied that things of such enor-
mity took place at- one of Mr.
Artukovci's c o n c e n t r ation
camps that orders were issued
for a temporary clean-up so
that a visiting Nazi commis-
sion would not be too shocked.
Attired in his Ustashi Nazi uni-
form, Mr. Artukovic appeared
at various camps accompanied
by high Gestapo officials.
Although he was sought by
Yugoslavia as a major war
criminal, Mr. Artukovic 'arrived
in the United States on July 16,
