Many Colleges in Pennsylvania
Still Use Discriminatory Forms

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Nearly 60 percent of the colleges
and professional schools of
Pennsylvania still use applica-
tion forms for student admis-
sions which ask potentially dis-
criminatory questions or request
photographs of applicants, it
was revealed here by the Phil-
adelphia Fellowship Commission
and • the. Philadelphia Jewish
Community Relations Council,
which have jointly completed a
survey of the state's 122 insti-
tutions of higher_ learning.
David Ullman, vice-president
of the Fellowship Commission
and a former chairman of the
community relations unit,
pointed out..: that despite the
fact that four years ago the
state's colleges—acting through
the Pennsylvania Association of
Colleges and Universities —
unanimously rejected race,
ligion or national origin as valid
criteria for student admissions,
only 40 percent of these colleges
"ask their applicants no poten-
tially discriminatory questions:"
Mr. Ullman also revealed that

House Urged 'to Hear
Wise, Magnes Defense

' WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Rep.
Emanuel Celler asked the House
Committee on Un-American Ac-
tivities to -hear testimony in de-
fense of the late Rabbis 'Stephen
S. Wise and Judah Magnes. The
two rabbis were accused before
the Committee by Benjamin
Gitlow; former secretary of the
Communist Party, of carrying
out COmmunist instructions or
collaborating with Reds.
Rep. Celler wrote Rep. Harold
H. Velde, chairman of the Com-
mittee, that "to malign the
dead is easy virtue." Rep. Velde
was told "it is incredible that
in view of the nature of the
charges levelled by former Com-
munist Benjamin Gitlow against
Rabbis Wise and Magnes in tes-
timony before your Committee,
that such charges go unchal7.
lenged."
Rep. Celler asked that the
Committee call a meeting to
hear witnesses who knew both
rabbis. He said "they cannot
now, unfortunatelY, speak for
themselves but there are others
who can." Rep Celler empha-
sized he could not recall any
charges by Mr. Gitlow against
the rabbis when they were alive.
"This," he said, " is a curious
asped of so much of the testi-
mony given by ex-Communists
both before your Committee and
others." He added he thought
"it is time" that this be ex-
plored.

MUNICH, (JTA) — A local
denazification tribunal has, in
effect, given, a clean bill of poli-
tical health to executed Nazi
General Alfred Jodl, one of the
defendants in the Nuremberg
trial of the major war criminals
before the International Military
Tribunal. Jodl was sentenced to
death in 1946 for crimes against
humanity and against peace.
Because the property of major
war _criminals may revert to the
state in whole or in part, pos-
thumous denazification proceed-
ings were necessary to permit
a settlement of Jodl's estate. A
Munich denazification tribunal
earlier this year completely ex-
onerated him. Since this was
a calculated affront to the war
crimes trials conducted by the
Allies, the U.S. High Commis-
sion politely remonstrated with
the Bavarian government—the
first American intervention , con-
cerning • denazification matters
in several years.
The initial acquittal was re-
versed and the case referred to
the Central Denazification Trib-
unal. Jodl's family appealed this
decision and has now been up-
held. The Tribunal ruled that
there was no evidence warrant-
ing his classification as a major
war criminal, an "activist" or a
m i l i t a r i s t. In consequence,
Jodl's next-of-kin will be his
sole heirs and Mrs. Jodl will
draw the very substantial pen-
sion due a widow of a four-star
general.

The glory of this latter house
shall be _ greater than of the
former, saith the Lord of hosts:
and in this place will I give
peace, with the Lord of hosts.—
Hag. 2:9.

the two groups in 1950, there has
been a 15 percent improvement
in admissions practices. He said
that the 1950 survey showed that
75 percent of the schools asked
potentially discriminatory ques-
tions or required photographs of
applicants. Mr. Ullman said that
the two organizations are nego-
tiating with schools which still
ask such questions to drop them
from the questionnaires.
He revealed that schools in
the Philadelphia area have the
best record on this matter and
that no state teachers college
ask such questions. "If they do
not need this type of informa-
tion before admitting students,"
he said, "we see no reason why
other school8 need it."
