U. S. Demands Israel Accede to UN Call to Stop Huleh Work
WASHINGTON—The American Embassy at Tel Aviv has notified
the Israel Foreign Ministry that the United States wants Israel to accede
to a United Nations request to stop work temporarily on a Jordan River
canal project near the Israel-Syrian frontier in the Huleh region.
Ambassador Abba - Eban has been similarly informed by Secretary
of State John Foster Dulles that the United States strongly supports
the United Nations recommendation that Israel cease work on the pro-
ject for the time being until the situation is "clarified."
State Department officials studied the., Arab threats against Israel
as expressed in the Arab—press in connection with Israel's refusal to 'be
intimidated into halting work on the Huleh project.
The Lebanese newspaper "Al-Sharq" published along article under
the headline "Forward to Action, Shishakli. All Arabs Support You. The
Time Has Arrived to Put An End to Zionism." In Iraq the publication
"Al-Saa" said "Iraq is prepared to support Syria and to send its troops
at the first 'signal of alarm in order to destroy the Tel Aviv government."
The official organ of Premier Mohammed Naguib, "Al-Tahrir," said
in Cairo that "the time is now past when Shertok (Israel Foreign Minis-
ter Moshe Sharett) was able to threaten every Arab state separately. He
now has to talk to all Arabs together. In this position he resembles an
ant threatening to overwhelm a mountain."
Egypt's most important newspaper "Al-Ahram" expressed the view
that "the Tel Aviv government has recently become very insolent, which
compels the Arabs to put an end to this insolence. Although Egypt is not
.
situated on the Jordan River it fully shares the attitude of Syria, Leba-
non and Jordan toward the Tel Aviv government and is prepared to im-
plement the mutual security pact."
The Syrian newspaper "Al-Zaman" reported that "the Syrian army
is ready to begin work for the purpose of diverting the Jordan River from
its natural course into Syrian territory. This will not be difficult with the
aid of the modern methods. The Zionists will then realize they have
wasted many millions without obtaining any. profit."
A Jordanian newspaper, "Al-Difa," said "this sharp dispute consti-
tutes a test for Gen. Bennike who now has to prove his neutrality and
publish his firm decision on this matter."
Israel Convinces UN Truce Chief Huleh Land Not Arab Owned
JERUSALEM -- Israel Foreign Minister Sharett on Tuesday con-
ferred with Maj. Gen. Vagn Bennike, United Nations truce chief in Pal-
estine, and hiS political advisor, Henri Vigier, on the Israel-Syrian diSpute
over the Israel-Huleh reclamation project.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a joint statement was issued re-
porting that Mr. Sharett had presented to Gen. Bennike information con-
cerning Israel's position on the dredging of a canal, in the Huleh Valley.
The Danish general promised to study the anew material and will meet
with Mr. Sharett again within a few days.
At the invitation of Mr. Sharett, Gen. Bennike has completed an in-
spection of land records in Safad and satisfied himself that the land in-
volved in the current dispute is not owned by Arabs.
Israel Cabinet Views Crisis ; Big Powers Alerted
to
consider the latest Syrian threats against Israel in connection with Israel's
drainage project in the Lake Huleh region. It was reported that the
Syrians had presented a second ultimatum to the headquarters of the
United Nations truce supervision machinery demanding. that Israel cease
immediately the digging of a nine-mile canal for the diversion of a portion
of the Jordan River waters to a hydroelectric station.
As the tension mounted here, a Foreign Ministry spokesman an-
nounced that Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett met with the representa-
tives of the United States, Britain and France at his home in Tel Ben-
jamin to discuss the Syrian situation. Present at the private conference
were British Ambassador Sir Francis Evans, American Charge d'Affaires
H. Russel and French Ambassador Pierre E. Gilbert.
The Israeli press in Tel Aviv attacked the demand by UN truce
