Fraternity Launches Drive
For Dental College in Israel

Detroit Alumni Chapter of
Alpha Omega, national dental
fraternity, this week launched
a campaign here for the projec-
ted dental college in Israel.,
Conducted jointly with the
American Friends of the He-
brew University, for a national
goal of $300,000, the Detroit
groups hopes to raise a mini-
mum of $30,000 as this commun-
ity's share in what has been
described as an immediate need
in Israel.
Co-chairmen of the • Detroit
driye are Dr. -Frank Reisman,
and Dr. Alex Kaplan. Dr. Louis
Galin, national president-elect,
and Dr. Fred Stein are regional
co-chairmen; in charge of the
drive in which the Detroit
Alumni Chapter, Chi Chapter of
the University of Michigan, Al-
pha Nu Chapter of the Univer-
sity of Detroit and Saginaw Val-
ley Alumni Chapter (Flint) will
participate.
Officers of the Detroit Alumni
chapter are: Dr. Allen Kline,
president; Dr. Bernard Schmidt,
vice-president; Drs. Gerald
Freedman and Edward Schneid-
er, secretaries, and Dr. Gerald
Aptekar, treasurer.
The Detroit drive was inaugu-
rated at a bruncheon at Holiday
Manor Sunday, with Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler as guest speaker. Dr.
Stein presided, and Dr. Reisman
outlined the campaign objec-
tives.

Dr. Galin, in an analysis of
Israel's dental needs, report-
ed, on the basis of a recent
survey, that there are 800
dentists in Israel, nearly 40
percent of them 'women; that
the4 average age . is 52; that
there are 350 in Tel Aviv, 200
in Haifa and 100 in Jerusa-
lem, and that 99 per cent of
them come from European
-schools, many with limited
training.

week, dealt with a number of •

Sidney J. Karbal, second vice-

tion on the Joint Defense Ap-

and the American Jewish Com-
mittee. Regional director Morton
J. Sobel included the immigra-
tion measures in his annual re-
port.
Announcement was made of
the celebration of the 40th an-
niversary of ADL, the principal
phase of which will be carried
out in Washington, D.C., when
President Eisenhower will re-
ceive the America's Democratic
Legacy Award for 1953, and will
appear on a nationally televised
network.
Full cooperation of ADL,, it
was stated, will be tendered to
the overall American Jewish
Tercentenary Commit tees in
respective communities.
Reference was made to the
stand taken by the Michigan
Tourist Council in refusing to
distribute discriminatory litera-
ture printed by Joe Bachunas,
Michigan resort owner. Names
of other resort owners still prac-
ticing discriminatory methods
were presented and subsequent
action authorized.
Wo men's ADL committees
have been carrying out a proj-
ect of distributing a calendar,
listing the religious holidays of
all faiths, to teachers and ad-
ministrators in major Michigan
cities.
Two surveys concerning sep-
aration of church and state in
Michigan schools and in hous-
ing discrimination were accept-
ed, and the publication of Os-
car Tarcov's "Bravo, My Mon-
ster" was approved for wide cir-
culation.
The' second ADL Institute was
scheduled for Oct. 16 to 18, at
Waldenwoods, Hartland, Mich.,
in which all ADL lodge and
chapter chairmen are invited to
participate.
Aaron Droock was elected
honorary board chairman, and
will be assisted by Ben Rose,
Wyandotte, and Aaron Pearl-
man, Battle Creek, vice-chair-
man ; and Morton Sobel, secre-
tary-treasurer.
