Restricting Membership

Chapters of Sigma Alpha Mu
fraternity at Wayne University
and the University of Michigan
will, for the first time, be able to
admit non-Jews as members of
the fraternity, following nulli-
fication at the SAM national
convention of a clause limiting
membership to Jewish students.
The vote was 126 to 14 in
favor of striking the "bias
clause" from the group's consti-
tution.
Two years ago, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon removed a similar re-.
strictive clause from its consti- -
tution. Two other fraternities
held conventions over the sum-
mer, but neithe'r succeeded in
securing removal of their "bias-
clauses."
