Shulamith Katznelson at Wayne as U.S.
Exchange Teacher; Invites Americans
co Study Hebrew at Israel Ulpan School

A distinguished Israeli school
principal and teacher, here as
a member of the group of
teachers from 48 countries who
are studying conditions in this
country under the. Smith-Mundt
portion of the U. S. Point 4
teachers' exchange pr o g r a m,
took occasion to urge American
Jews to study in Israel in order
to be able to participate active-
ly in the Hebraic renaissance.
Miss Shultamith Katznelson,
director of the famous school
Ulpan Akiva of Nathanyah, Is-
rael, formerly Ulpan Nahariah,
presently is participating in
seminars 'at Wayne University.
Together with a group of 16
from 15 countries—part of the
larger group that came here
under the Smith-Mundt provi-
sions — Miss Katznelson, whom
her co-workers call Shula, par-
ticipated in a three-week orien-
tation in Washington upon her
arrival in this country. It was
an introduction to American
ways of life, which included an
exchange of experiences among
participants and American
leaders.

The second phase of her
trip is an 11-week stay at
Wayne University, with semi-
nars, studies of conditions in
this country and ex-Changes of
viewpoints being arranged by
Marion Edman, professor of
education at the local uni-
versity. Miss Katznelson also
will study methods of teach-
ing languages at the Univer-
sity of Michigan during this
period. This phase will be fol-
lowed by tours of other states
for acquisition of a more ex-
tensive knowledge of this
country by the visitors.

Hordeses. She is one of three
Israelis who have been commis-
sioned under the Smith-Mundt
program to come to this coun-
try this year. Shulamith Rabi-
novich of Jerusalem came with
her and the third, Mrs. Barth,
will arrive later.
The interesting visitor's chief
concern upon her arrival here
was to undertake to encourage
American Jews to go to Israel,
to study at her school—Ulpan
Akiva. For a nominal fee of
$300, a five-month course of
study can be pursued at this
school, Miss Katznelson pointed
out. She expained that in the
Ulpanim there are specialized
courses for newcomers in Israel,
as well as. for Baha'i, Arabs and
others who desire to study the
ISraeli ways and Hebrew. Her
own Ulpan, she reported with
pride, is known as "Ulpan de
Luxe," because of the advances
it has made in teaching
methods.
Students desiring to study in
the Ulpan can register either
through the Jewish Agency or
the Israeli Consulates.
