THE HOUSE Un-American Ac-
tivities Committee has become
used to evasive witnesses main-
ta:ning "I refuse to answer on
the grounds that it might in-
criminate me," but one radio
writer on the stand came up with
a new one . . Abe Green, in
"Variety," tells of this witness
pondering over a question mo-
mentarily, then having a long,
whispered consultation with his
lawyer, and finally answering, "I
refuse to answer because I don't
understand one damn word of
my counsel's advice."

in a hotel during the JWV con-
vention, and remarked that he
wasn't feeling too well . . . Harry
introduced Ben to a gent he had
been talking with . . who im-
mediately thrust a glass tube
into his mouth, took Ben's tem-
perature and murmured, "Hm,
doesn't look too good" . . . Harry
began to smile as Ben's face

DO YOU REMEMBER the old

veyed heartbreaking stories of

Girl Thought Dead -
Re-United with. Father

The unstinting hope of a 13-
year-old girl and the unrelent-
less search of HIAS, the Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society, led re-
cently to the union of the girl

loon trying to t ntice papa into
laying off the lager beer and free
lunch and coming home to his
starving family? . . The pres -
ent-day, Hollywood version of
that sad situation has for its
improbable setting a special
table at the luxurious Hillcrest
Golf Club, with a cast of char-
acters consisting of 11 world-
famous comedians . . . They love
one another's company and
jokes so much, their children
can't even persuade them to
come home to cash their salary
checks.
THE ELEVEN MEMBERS of
this ultra-exclusive fraternity
are Groucho, Harpo and Chico
Marx, Danny Kaye, George Jes
sel, Lou Holtz, George Burns :
Jack Benny and the three zany
Ritz Brothers . . . It's unlikely
that the club will grow, since
the rules state explicitly that
any new candidate must get 15
affirmative votes . . . which is
rather difficult when only 11 men
are eligible to cast ballots . . .
Golf is the least of the members'
worries . . . Julian Silverblatt
writes that eight years after the
club had been established, Holtz
and Jessel found themselves on
the clubhouse veranda for the
first time . . . Jessel spotted the
18th green and exclaimed,
"When did they put in a golf
course here?" . . Last year,
says Julian, the most " disliked
member of the Hillcrest Club
dropped dead on the first tee
while practicing swings with a
driver . . . When word of this
percolated back to the comedi-
ans' table, George Burns turned
to Danny Kaye triumphantly
and said, "I told you this was a
tough course" . . . One lady
member of the Hillcrest Club
sits for hours at the nearest
table to the group's sacred meet-
ing spot with a hearing aid
pressed to her ear . .. "It's th?
only place," she explains, you
can hear all the latest jokes
without one "darn commercial."

HELEN GINDINS

with her father, who thought his
child dead.
Helen Gindins was only three-
years-old when the Nazis sepa-
rated her from her parents, and
was saved from their brutality
by one of those things called a
quirk of fate. Four years ago she
was found in a French orphan-
age by HIAS officials.
She was sent to her cousins,
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Simchowitz,
of Brooklyn, who have cared for
her as their own daughter for
that time. But, Helen never gave
up hope that one or - both or
her parents was still alive. And
HIAS authorities continued the
search, until last month they lo-
cated her father.
Because the father is on a
Polish quota, he would not be
eligible for entry here for many
years, so the Simchowitz family
decided to send the girl to her
father where she awaits a new
and happy experience.

Thou shalt bring them in, and
plant them in the - mountain of
thine inheritance.—Ex. 15:17.

Personal Instruction

Sunday and Evenings Included

Rabbi Elimelech of Lizensk
once told his pupils that if they
wished to learn how to conduct
themselves erev Yom Kippur
they could take a lesson from
the humble but pious tailor
on the outskirts of the town.
Sensing the importance of the
rabbi's admonition, they pro-
ceeded to the tailor's house,
where they placed themselves
under the windows in the hope
of detecting the concealed vir-
tues of the man. The tailor and
his sons at the time were in the
midst of prayer. When they were
through davening they put on
their Sabbath rainment, lit can-
dies and set the table. The eating
ritual was attended by much re-
joicing, but when it was over,
Berl the tailor proceeded to a
shelf and pulled out a book in
which he meticulously recorded
all the transgressions he corn-
mitted during the year.
Raising his eyes heavenward,
the tailor reminded the Master
of the Universe that this was
"the day of reckoning between
us" and then he proceeded to
read off the sins he committed
throughout the year. When he
finished reading the list of sins,
the tailor sobbingly went to an-
other shelf and, pulling out an-
other and heavier ledger, turned
again toward heaven and spoke:
"Master of the Universe, now
that I have listed my sins against
you, I shall read off the averoth
you committed against me. If
justice is to guide our reckoning
you owe me more than I am in-
debted to you. However, since
it is erev Yom Kippur, when it is
customary to forgive each other,
I forgive your averoth against
me and my household and all I
ask of you is to forgive us for
the transgressions we committed
against you."
The tailor then filled a glass
with whiskey, made the appro-
priate benediction, and pro-
claimed loudly: "L'chaim, Mas-
ter of the Universe, we have
condoned each others' sins and
all averoth, thine and mine, are
wiped out."
When the pupils returned they
told the rabbi that they con-
sidered the tailor's conduct im-
pudent and desecratory of the
occasion. But the rabbi of
Lizensk thought otherwise, for
he told his pupils : "The Holy
One, blessed be He, and His
sacred retinue had come to hear
the words of Bed the tailor as he
conversed in great simplicity
and humility with the Almighty.
His utterance brought rejoicing
to all heavens and the Almighty
granted him forgiveness and to
all Israel."
