(Lev. XXIII: 23-25). With these words the observ- ance of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, was ordained. Unlike most J e w i s h holidays, which commemorate some his- torical or seasonal event, Rosh Hashanah has a universal sig- nificance. It celebrates the an- niversary of the Creation, which Lord opens three books on Rosh according to the Jewish calen- Hashanah, one listing the names of the completely right- dar, occurred 5,713 years ago. Down through the ages, Rosh Hashanah has been observed as a Day of Judgment — a time when God, seated on the throne of mercy, hears men recount their deeds, and avow their sins. It is the moment when the Lord examines the roster of all individuals and inscribes their fate for the coming year. Rosh Hashanah marks the be- ginning of the "High Holy Days," a 10-day period of re- pentence, ending with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. From this belief stems the tra- ditional greeting among Jews on Rosh Hashanah: "Leshanah Tobah Tikateb V'tehatem." "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." Although a day of great solemnity, Rosh Hashanah is not a mournful Holiday. It is a time for introspection and affir- mation.
