The term "Agada" is applied
to that part of Talmudic or Rab-
binic literature which contains
homilies, stories and general lit-
erature, as distinguished from
Halacha which is simply a mat-
ter : of law. The term comes from
.a root meaning - to tell" and
:thus would imply that which the
scholars told of events, tales or
general knowledge. Since the ac-
tivities of the rabbis were a mix-
ture of deciding technical points
of law, as well as. deriving the
ethical and moral precepts from
the Scriptures and from life as
a whole, it is not strange to find
that in the Talmudic and Rab-
binic literature one finds a great
wealth of stories, homilies and
general information besides the
basic and detailed laws of the
Jewish way of life.
