At the ceremony, which took place in 1918 while the. Turks still
controlled much of Palestine, Dr. Weizmann dedicated 12 foun-
dation stones on Mt. Scopus, one for each of the tribes of Israel.
The University opened in 1925 with a small number of de-
partments, all dedicated to research. It now includes Israel's only
medical school (the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School),
as well as schools of law, agriculture, education and social sci-
ences.

place." This is used to denote
the hiding place in the syna-
gogue or cemetery where old
torn sacred books and documents
are kept as well as where some
heretical documents are stored.
The "Genizoh" originally served
to protect sacred things from
being harmed, and guarded he-
retical things that might be
taken for sacred from reaching
the public eye. In searching
through old synagogues many
interesting documents are found
that would fall into these cate-

What made this term popular
in recent times was the discov-
ery in the year 1896 by Solomon
Schecter of a fragment of what
was claimed to be the original
Hebrew of Ecclesiastes. This
was found in the hoard of an
old synagogue near Cairo, and
so whatever has been taken
from this hiding place has been
formally called the "Cairo Ge-
nizoh." Since then, there have
been other hiding places found
for many documents, and their
discoveries usually stir the schol-
arly world into speculation. The
traditionalists who receive in-
struction through traditional
faith are not as easily stirred
as are the so-called critics.
