Enrollments in Local Jewish. Schools

.Wide public distribution was
made this week by the Jewish
Welfare Federation of a new
pamphlet designed to stimulate
enrollment and interest in Jew-
ish education.
The two color publication in-
quires on the cover,• "Has your
child asked you ... 'What makes
us Jews?' " and discusses educa-
tional means available in Detroit
to help provide children a foun-
dation a n d background for
their lives as American Jews.
Contained in the pamphlet is
a complete list of schools at
which the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration supports of ter no on

" 'What makes us Jews?' " the
pamphlet explains, "isn't the
kind of question you can answer
in a word or a phrase. And you
can't distract your son or
daughter with a new red wagon
and hope the question will be
forgotten. Because it won't. It
a question that they'll be asking
you and asking themselves—for
most of the rest of their lives.
And there's no quick answer.
"By attending a modern, ef-
fective Jewish school, together
with others of his own age," it
continues, "your child will gain
a rich and joyful experience as
a Jew. He and his schoolmates
will live and develop in a con-
text of Jewish thoughts and
Jewish surroundings. He will ab-
sorb the beauty and wisdoni of
Jewish traditions and history
going back more than three
thousand years, and he will be-
gin to feel that this culture is
his possession. He will gain
values and standards which will
fit him to be the best kind of
Jew, and the best kind of
American."
The pamphlet was issued by
Federation's education division
of which Morris Garvett is
chairman. Information regard-
ing the school's programs may
be obtained by calling the in-
stitutions directly or Samuel
Cohen, education division direc-
tor, WO. 5-3939.

Honor Segal's Birthday
With Technion Gifts

Friends of Karl Segal, of 18940
Hartwell, recently honored him
on his 75th birthday by con--
tributing to a scholarship fund,
already established in his honor
at the Haifa Institute of Tech-
nology (Technion).
Mr. Segal, long a friend and
worker for the Technion, was
given a testimonial dinner in
1950 by the Detroit Chapter of
the 'Technion. The fund was
created at this dinner.
Although no public mention
has been made of the fund since
that time, money has been
trickling in so that today the
K a r 1 Segal Scholarship Fund
stands at $350.
Events honoring Mr. Segal's
birthday were a luncheon at
Temple Beth El, and an evening
reception at The Park Shelton
Hotel.
