Embassy in Jordan Ordered To Intervene for U.S. Jew Tax Exemption Statute For Parochial Schools Declared Void by Courts OAKLAND, Calif., (JTA) — A California court ruled uncon- stitutional a law giving private non-profit schools — chiefly parochial schools — tax exemp- tions. The decision of the Ala- meda County State Superior Court will be appealed to the State Supreme Court. The judge who announced the decision said that the law ex- empting parochial schools from taxation conflicted with an ar- ticle of the state Constitution which permitted tax exemptions to hospitals and religious and charitable institutions. The Constitution makes no mention of educational institutions and on this basis the judge ruled out the law giving tax relief to pri- vate schools. (Mr. Biskind is a cousin of Mrs. Jack Medvin of 18684 Murray WASHINGTON, (JTA) —The State Department has ordered the U.S. embassy in Jordan to help an American Jew whose request the Embassy had turned down because he was Jewish, Sen. Herbert H. Lehman's office announced here. Elliott L. Biskind of New York had complained to Sen. Lehman that the Embassy refused recently to try to obtain for him information on how to go about registering for property owned by him and his brothers in the Old City of Jerusalem, now in Jordanian hands. The Embassy told Mr. Biskind it did not "deem it appropriate" to aid Jews in view of the "particularly violent anti-Jewish feel- ing prevailing at the present time in Jordan." Sen. Lehman took the matter to the State Department and his office said the Department "has now replied, ad- vising us that the Embassy at Amman has been directed to approach the officials of Jordan and to try to obtain from them the necessary information" requested by Mr. Biskind. The State Department said it would notify Sen. Lehman when a reply is received from Amman. Hill, Detroit.
