By Uncle David

Dear . Boys and Girls:
One of the wisest men in the
annals of Jewish history was the
great sage Hillel who lived dur-
ing the reign of Herod the
Great. He was descended from
King David and lived in Baby-
lon until he thought that he
could gain more knowledge in
Jerusalem.
He advanced in his studies until
people realized that he possessed
far greater knowledge of the
Law than any other teacher,
and he was loved and revered
by all the people of Israel.
In the Talmud, there is a
story telling of the great pati-
ence Hillel possessed. One day
two men had an argument con-
cerning the great sage whose
patience and good temper were
well known. One man main-
tained that it was impossible to
make Hillel lose his temper,
while the other declared that he
could easily provoke him. And
to prove his point, he offered
400 golden crowns as a wager.
It was the eve of Sabbath and
Hillel was just making prepara-
tions when a loud knocking was
heard at his door. "Where is
Hillel? Where is Hillel?" a voice
called.
"Who is there?" Hillel asked.
"Please see me immediately
on an urgent matter," the man
who wished to provoke Hillel
called. Hillel bade the man en-
ter and asked, "What can I do
for you, my son?"
"I wish to ask a question. Will
you tell me why the Babylonians
have round heads?" He meant
to provoke Hillel. But the sage
answered: "That is easy, my
son; it is because not enough
care is taken of them when
they are babies."
The man thanked Hillel and
went away, and the sage re-
turned to his preparations for
the Sabbath. There was another
loud knock, and again the man
stood in front of Hillel's house
and called, "Where is Hillel?
Where is Hillel?"
"What do you wish my son?"
he asked in his gentle manner.
"I wish to ask a question. Why
do the Tadmorians have round
eyes?"

"That is easy my son; it is
because they live on the sandy
plains: and they would be more
likely to have grains of sand
blown into their eyes if they
were oval than if they were
round as they are at present."
"Many thanks," said the man,
astonished that Hillel knew the
answer to his silly question, and
he went away to think of an-
other effort •to provoke him.
Presently he returned, knocked
louder than before and shouted,
"Where is Hillel? Where is
Hillel?"
"Yes, my son, and what can I
do for you?"
"I wish to ask you a 'question.
Why do the Africans have broad
feet?"
Hillel smiled and replied:
"That is easy. It is because they
live on marshy land: and the
broader their feet the less likely
they are to fall in."
Then the man was too aston-
ished to ask more questions. But
after a long silence he said: "Art
thou Hillel who is styled the
Prince of Israel?"
Hillel said that the title was
given to him, and the man said
angrily: "Then I wish that the
like of you may never again be
found in Israel.' •
"Why so, my son?" asked
the astonished teacher.
"Because through your pa-
tience I have lost 400 crowns!'
"Ah," replied the sage, "the
money is not entirely lost, be-
cause in the future you will be
more prudent; and it is better
that thou lose the money than
that Hillel should lose his pa-
tience.''

Israel Sends 4id
To Earthquake Victims

Important: Very Early Deadline
For the Rosh Hashanah Edition

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—As the Is-
raeli naval flotilla, which work-
ed with American, British and
Greek naval units in rescue
and relief work among the
many thousands of survivors of
the disastrous earthquakes that
struck the Ionian Islands off the
Greek coast recently, left Greek
waters, Israeli aid to the strick-
en Greek people entered a new
phase.
The first transport of blankets
desperately needed by victims of
the tremors, many of whom are
injured and some of whom bare-
ly escaped from homes which
were wrecked, was flown from
Israel to Athens. The shipment
was prepared by the Israel Red
Mogen Dovid.
The shipment was addressed
to Archbishop Spyridom, chair-
man of the Greek relief com-
mittee for the victims. It was
the Archbishop who during the
Nazi occupation issued a decla-.
ration calling on all Greeks to
aid the Jews. For this he was
jailed by the Germans.
Greek King Paul and Queen
Frederika thanked the comman-
der of the Israeli flotilla for the
assistance given by his men.
The Greek Minister to Israel
H. Moscolpulus, publicly thank-
ed. the Red Mogen Dovid for its
organization of a relief program
in Israel in behalf of the Greeks.

Because Labor Day is separated from Rosh Hashanah
by only two days and our Rosh Hashanah edition will go to
press that week, it is absolutely necessary that we set a very
early deadline for copy for that issue.
The issue will be dated Sept. 11, in accordance with U. S.
Post Office regulations, but will be sent to press several days
earlier. Deadline for ALL copy for that issue will be at 3
p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3. Deadline for photographs for that
issue will be at 9 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 3.
Synagogues and organizations are especially urged to
make note of this special deadline, which will be strictly ad-
hered to.
