Eban Has 'Clear Picture'
Of U.S. Near East Policy
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Is-
rael Ambassador Abba Eban said
that as a result of a series of
talks with various high officials
in the State Department, he
now has "a very clear piCture
on how the United States is
thinking" on a great variety of
subjects.
The Ambassador made his
statement following a confer-
ence with Assistant Secretary
of State Henry A. Byroad in
charge of Near Eastern affairs.
The conference rounded out a
series of talks Eban had with
State Department officials, prior
to his scheduled departure for
Jerusalem for consultation with
members of the Israel govern-
ment.
Eban emphasized that "the
whole field of common inter-
ests" between the United States
and Israel was reviewed by By-
made and him "in a very de-
tailed and very friendly spirit."

The services division was
presented with the . Detroit
Service Group annual victory
award trophy and the co-
chairmen were awarded indi-"
vidual trophies. The victory
award will be kept on display
in the Fred M. Butzel Memor-
ial Building and will be re-

sion each year.
A pictorial review of the 1953
campaign highlights, featuring
Keil as commentator, and an in-
teresting quiz game was fea-
tured on the program. Prizes
were given for golf and the quiz.

Austrian Consulate General in-
dicated that the talks between
the Austrian government and
representatives of Jewish organ-
izations on the payment of rep-
arations to Jews who suffered
damages under the Nazis will
be resumed "in the first half of
September."
The Consulate reported that
Austrian officials have pointed
out to representatives of Jewish
organizations that Austrian law
in no way discriminates between
applicants for restitution regard-
less of their nationality. "It was
further stressed that no differ-
ence should be made between
Austrian citizens and other per-
sons, irrespective of whether-
they reside in the country or
abroad," the Consulate stated.
All Defendants Meted Out 'Severe'
Penalties in German Bank Case
FRANKFURT, (JTA) — After
a trial which lasted 10 months
all principal defendants in the
case of the former "Jewish Re-
stitution Bank" here were sen-
tenced to terms that caused as-
tonishment because of their
severity.
Dr. Joseph Klibansky, gen-
erally considered Germany's best
known Jewish attorney, w a s
sentenced to 18 months jail in
addition to a fine of $4,500 for
being an accessory to violation
of foreign currency regulations
rand of certain provisions of the
corporation law.
Wilhelm Mar r ien, originally
technical advisor of the bank
and later its manager, received
10- months imprisonment for in-
fringement of the corporation
law, for being accessory to vio-
lation of foreign currency regu-
lations and for bribery.

was appointed by the State as
custodian of the bank, received
six months imprisonment for
corruption. Wolfgang Steege, a
German banker from Hamburg,
was fined $600 for being accesr
sory-to violation of foreign cur-
rency regulations. Cashier Sie-
freid Frohlich was let off with
a fine of 8100.
Dr. Klibansky, was found
guilty of having aided and
abetted the transfer of blocked
mark accounts to their Jewish
owners abroad, a transaction
which was illegal at the time,
in 1950, but which was legalized
a few months after the Jewish
Restitution Bank was shut
down.
Dr. Klibansky was also con-
victed of having contributed to
bankruptcy although the bank's
assets exceed its debts even
today. The court found, how-
ever, that there was no evidence
that Dr. Klibansky h a d en-
riched himself, or had person-
ally violated foreign currency
regulations.
Dr. Klibansky, who will file
an appeal with the Supreme
Court, issued a statement as-
serting that Judge Hoffmeyer,
who issued the verdict, had been
unable to overcome his resent-
ment at having been placed in
an internment camp at the end
of the war because he had been
a member of the Nazi Party
and a judge throughout the
Nazi regime.
Doctors Develop
New Concept on TB
the really
DENVER. (JTA) — A concept
of treating tuberculosis and re-
storing patients to useful, pro-
ductive lives by getting them out
of bed months ahead of current
procedures while treating them
with "wonder drugs" was de-
scribed by .a National Jewish
Hospital team of physicians
here.
In order for a "total job" to
be done, patients must be re-
. conciled to almost doubling the
present period of hOspitalization
under strictly controlled condi-
tions, Dr. Sidney H. Dressler,
medical director, and Dr. Gard-
ner Middlebrook, director of re-
search and laboratories at the
interfaith tuberculosis hospital,
pointed out.
Their studies indicate that
prolonged bed rest does not add
to the efficiency of treatment
with antimicrobial drugs. They
reported that patients with no
toxic symptoms or fever have
been removed from bed rest in
from eight to 10 weeks.
