Jerusalem as Israel's Capital Is
Inevitable, Prof. Akzin Declares

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The
setting up of Israel's Foreign
Ministry offices in Jerusalem
and its establishment as Israel's
capital is inevitable but a bit
late, Dr. Benjamin Akzin, Dean
of the Law School of the He-
brew University in Jerusalem,
who is guest.:777:TONI , . :,
professor this
summer at the
University of:,
Michigan; de-a
Glared recently
at a reception
tendered him
by the. Beth Is-
rael Community
Center and Hil-
lel Foundation.
Prof. Akzin,
who has dis- Prof. Akzin
tinguished himself in the fight
for Israel's independence during
the emergency years, pointed
out that .Jerusalem is insepar-
able from the Jewish state - and
that it is. unthinkable that this
city, which has been built up
by Jewish pioneers,. -should be
left out of the jurisdiction of'
Israel.

Dr. Akzin reviewed Israel's
development -in the past five
years and declared that the
ties between the new state
and world Jewry remain

strong, ,with the latter bene-
fitting from the developments
in Israel. He asserted that
while hostility against Jews
throughout- the world has not
vanished, it has weakened;
and that the contempt from
which Jews had suffered has
greatly declined as a result of
Jewish achievements.

Referring to the settlement of
700,000 Jews in Israel - in the
last four years, Dr. Akzin asked
where they could have gone if
not for Israel's independence —
with doors being shut to Jewish
migrants everywhere.
He denied, during an interest-
ing discussion period that fol-
lowed his address, that the ex-
istence of several parties in Is-
rael means _chao s. He con-
sidered it a normal development
and asserted that while the two-
party system is workable in this
country and in England, it is
not necessarily applicable else-
where.
Rabbi Julius Weinberg pre-
sided at the meeting that pre-
ceded the reception.
