New Israel. Stamp
Honors RaM13aNI

In order to commemorate the
seventh International Congress
of the History of Science, Israel
issued a stamp showing the
great Jewish philosopher and
physician Rabbi Moshe Ben
Maimon, also known as Mai-
monides or the RaMBaM.
Maimonides, born in Cordova,
Spain, March 30, 1135, was the
son of a judge and a member
of the Rabbinical Council, who
was his first teacher in Bible,
Talmud and mathematics. Ara-
bic masters introduced him to
philosophy, natural sciences and
medicine.
When Cordova was taken by
the Almohades in 1148, his fam-
ily and all the other Jews who
refused to accept Islam, left the
city. After 10 years of wander-
ings they settled in Fez, Mor-
occo, only to find the same sit-
uation.
There Maimonides wrote his
famous address to the Jewish
community in which he ap-
pealed to them to continue their
customs and traditions. In Fez
he also began his commentary
on the Mishnah and his Epistle
on Apostasy where he defended
Jews w h o perforce confessed
Islam. -
In 1165 he went to Palestine
and then moved to Egypt where
he was appointed personal
physician to Saladin. While
serving the Royal family, he
wrote several important works
on hygiene.
In 1180 he completed his
and important work, Mishneh
Torah. Another of his impor-
tant works was his address to
the Jews of Yemen. Being espe-
cially favored by the Vizier in
the year 1185, he soon became
the head of the Jewish com-
munity of Egypt and utilized his
influence in behalf of the per-
secuted Jews of the Orient.
About 1190 he finished his
most important work "The
Guide to the Perplexed" (Moreh
Nebuchim), a philosophical de-
fense of Judaism. The purpose
of this book was to guide those
who had become perplexed and
uncertain in their faith as the
result of the apparent contra-
diction between the teachings of
philosophy and the Bible.
He tried to harmonize Biblical
and Rabbinic teachings with
philosophy, especially with Aris-
totle. Written in Arabic, the
work was translated into He-
brew, and, during the first part
of the 13th Century, into Latin.
This work strongly influenced
his Arabian, Jewish and Chris-
tian successors. Ever ything
which preceded him became his-
torical and antiquated after his
appearance, and with few ex-
ceptions, lost all importance in
the development of the philoso-
phical problems. His influence
on Spinoza, Moses Mendelsohn
and even in the 19th and 20
Century on Herman Cohen, is
quite obvious.

His fame is recorded in the
saying, "From Moses to Moses
there is none like unto Moses"

,

Maimonides died in Fostat,
known as Cairo today, Dec. 13,
1204. His body was buried in
Tiberias, Palestine. It is the
custom of the Jewish citizens in
Israel to go in pilgrimages to
his grave on his birthday, and
a traditional ceremony takes
place.

BENZION KUNCMAN, two-year.
old Israeli polio victim, whose
last hope to be able to walk lies
in the unique treatment he can
obtain at the Bellevue Medical
Center in New York, as he ar-
rived in the U. S. along with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. David
Kuncman, with the aid of HIAS,
the Hebrew Immigrant Aid So-
ciety. The child, son of World
War II refugees, was stricken
with polio last year, which
claimed the life of his sister.,
After ten weekg treatment in
Paris, physicians declared that
the boy could be made to walk
if he was brought to the U. S.,
for the unique muscle re-educa-
tion treatment offered here..
HIAS arranged for his entry in.
to the U. S. and admission to the
Institute of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation of New York
University - Bellevue Medical
Center.

Cornerstone for Kaplan
School Laid in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, (JTA) - A cor-
nerstone for the Kaplan School
of Economic and Social Sci-
ences, which will be a part of
the Hebrew University, was laid
here at a ceremony presided
over by Joseph Sprinzak, Speak-
er of the Israel Parliament.
A total of $500,000 dollars was
raised in the United States for
the building in which the school
will be housed. The annual bud-
get of the institution will be
covered by funds raised in Is-
rael which will include contribu-
tions from the Israel Govern-
ment, the Jewish Agency, the
Histadrut, and the Hebrew Uni-
versity. The Kaplan School,
named after Eliezer Kaplan, late
Israeli Minister of Finance, will
award degrees of Bachelor of
Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor
of Philosophy. Pinhas Lavon,
member of the Israel Cabinet,
was named president of the
school and Professor Umberto
Bachi will be the dean of the
institution.

Jewish Leader Bequeathes
$100,000 for New YM-YWHA

WILMINGTON, (JTA) Mil-
ton Kuntz, local Jewish leader
who was for many years presi-
dent of the Jewish Federation of
Delaware, bequeathed $100,000 to
the Wilmington YM-YWHA to
help the agency secure a new
building, it was learned when
his will was made public. Kuntz
died here last month. Numer-
ous other Jewish institutions
will receive legacies under the
terms of his will.
