Orthodox Plan Bitter Fight Against ,
Bill to Conscript Israeli Women

JERUSALEM, (JTA) •— T h e
government's anticipated intro-
duction in Parliament of its Na-
tional Service Bill for Women
was expected to touch off a
series of fireworks here
as religious elements continued
their protests against provisions
of the bill which would require
girls 18-26 claiming exemption
from military service on reli-
gious grounds to do other forms
of national service for a two-
year period.

Despite sharp discrepancies
between religious and non-
religious groups in Parliament,
no Cabinet crisis is expected
over the measure which it ap-
proved with only two religious
members dissenting. General
Zionist leaders have made it
clear they will not make it
an issue. The Hapoel Mizrachi
central committee was to meet
to consider the situation.

An unprecedented demonstra-
tion took place here when 600
religious women demonstrated
before Parliament against the
bill. Some of them tried to
enter the building but were
blocked off by the police who
had strict orders not to use force
against the demonstrators but
to disperse them quietly. Fire
hoses were brought up by the
police, but were not used.

While stormy scenes took
place outside Parliament,
there were heated debates in
the lobby of the building be-
tween religious and non-re-
ligious deputies. It is under-
stood that One of the Main ob-
jections to the bill raised by
religious leaders is the pro-
cedure of the medical examin-
ation which the women have
to undergo prior to being in-
ducted into the national serv-
ice. Another objection is that
the bill may open the door to
the recruitment of religious
girls for any task, either civil-
ian or military.

Body of U.S. Zionists

was made by the Mizrachi and
Poale Hamizrachi, two Orthodox
Zionist groups.
The appeal was made to head
off a mass demonstration
planned by the Agudath Israel
and Poale Agudah, two other
Orthodox groups which strongly
oppose the bill. The two organ-
izations intend to mobilize 100
rabbis to head the demonstra-
tion carrying 100 Torah Scrolls.
The Mizrachi opposes such a
demonstration, fearing that the
Scrolls will be desecrated during
disturbances which are con-
sidered inevitable, especially if
the police use fire hoses to dis-
perse the demonstrators.

London Chief Rabbi Backs
Israel Rabbinate on Issue
LONDON, (JTA)—Chief Rabbi

Dr. Israel Brodie of England
cabled the Chief Rabbinate of
Israel declaring that "m a n y
rabbis" in England will support
the stand taken by the Chief
Rabbis of Israel on the National
Service Bill for Women.
"I am gravely perturbed by
the reports of the strife regard-
ing the draft of the bill for na-
tional conscription of women,"
the cable said. "I wish to ex-
press sympathy and support of
your stand. I speak in the name
of many rabbis in this country,
including Haham Gaon and the
London Beth Din (Rabbinical
Court) who pray for unity,
peace and security in the Holy
Land."

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Prepara-
tions for the first representa-
tive assembly of American Zion-
ists are under way, it was re-
ported by I. Klinov, Jewish
Agency spokesman. "This may
herald a new spirit of unity
among American Zionist groups,"
he stated.
Klinov enumerated several
problems confronting the Zion-
ist movement, the most impor-
tant of which, he said, is the en-
largement of the Agency and the
future structure of the World
Zionist Organization.
He also emphasized that the
three principal addresses deliv-
ered at the session—by Premier
David Ben-Gurion, Speaker of
the Knesset Joseph Sprinzak
and Jewish Agency chairman
Dr. Nahum Goldmann — all
agreed on the need for "har-
nessing for work for Jewry all
sections - of Jewry, whether they
are organized in the Zionist
movement or are outside of it,
without weakening the Zionist
Organization proper."
