Next. Tuesday will be Tisha
b'Ab. For many centuries it Was
a day _ of mourning. On this
„clay we commemorate .' the _
struction of both the First Wand
the Second Temples. We mourn
on this day . the destruction of
the great • house of prayer in
Jerusalem and the diSpersion of
Jews from their homeland.
.Many sad events have taken
• place on this day, and in ail
-Jewish communities the day is
marked by fasting, by. .the
reading of -the Book of Lamen-
• •
ta Lions:
The sadness of Tisha b'Ab
leas gripped the imagination not
only of Jews -but also of Christ-
ians. - There is a famous poem,
"Oh. Weep for Those," which is
among the • best -known • of the
works of -the great • bard,- Lord
• Byron.. This poem _reads:
Oh! weepforr - those that wept by
Babel's stream,
Whose shrines. are. desolate,
whose land a dream;
Weep for the harp of Judah's
broken shell;
Mourn—where their God hath
dwelt the godless dwell!

And so, w e e p i n g, Jews
throughout the ages directed
their gaze at' this Wailing Wall,
the only wall that remains, .in-
destructible, as a remnant of the
ancient Temple, on the site of
which there now is the Moslem
Mosque of Omar. •

And where shall Israel lave her
bleeding feet?
And when shall Zion''s songs
again seem sweet?
And Judah's melody once more
rejoice.
The hearts that leap'd before its
heavenly voice?
LM—A report on
STOCKHO
the position of the Jewish wom-
an in Israel was presented here
Tuesday at the International
Socialist, Women's conference by
Rachael Shazar, Israeli delegate.
Mrs. Shazar emphasized that
when the Histadrut, Israel's
Federation of Labor, was estab-
lishe d; it had 7,000 women
among its members. At present
there are 200,000 women in the
Histadrut, most of them mem-
bers of the Israel labor party,
which controls the Histadrut.
The working women in Israel,
Mrs. Shazar stated, are organ-
ized in a special council which
defends the professional - inter-
ests of the women in the , coun-
try, and also conducts Large
scale programs of social we'-
f are, including the establish-
ment of agricultural training
farms, kindergartens and chil-
dren's homes.
Immigrant girls are receiving
vocational and language train-
ing in institutions maintained
by the Council of Working
Women, Mrs. Shazar reported.
The Israeli delegate said that
special attention has been de-
voted to the situation of the
Arab women in Israel. The Jew-
ish state had been the first
state in the Middle East to grant
voting rights to women, Mrs.
Shazar pointed out. She also
reported that Socialist women
in Israel are active in the coun-
try's political life and are rep-
resented in the parliament by
seven deputies who are respon-
sible for securing legislation for
women's rights and working con-
ditions.

ERIE DALE, PORT STANLEY
British Minister of
State Selwyn Lloyd Tuesday re-
fused in Commons to divulge the
nature of a protest by Israel
Ambassador Eliahu Elath to the
British government over a re-
cent statement by John B. Glubb
Pasha, British head of Jordan's
army. The statement' on the re-
cent Israel-Jordan border inci-
dents was anti-Jewish.
Replying to ,a query by Labor-
ite Woodrow Wyatt, Minister
Lloyd said that Britain had re-
ceived the protest June 22 but
added, "I see no reason to dis-
close the nature' of confidential
representations and so depart
from the normal rules of diplo-
matic courtesy."
Mr. Wyatt then pointed- out
the anti-Semitic nature of Glubb
Pasha's remarks and asked what
control the British government
had over him and to what ex-
tent he spoke for the British
government. Mr. Lloyd • replied,
that Glubb Pasha was a serv-
ant of the Jordan government
to which he was responsible.

But even this Wailing Wall
can no lodger be seen by Jews.
It is in Old Jerusalem, the por-
