WASHINGTON—Each month
the President receives about a
thousand letters in foreign lan-
guages. Those in Hebrew and
Yiddish are sent to Raphael
Margolin, official translator of
"Jewish languages" for the Di-
vision of Language Services of
the Department of State.
Margolin is responsible for all
official Yiddish and Hebrew
translations for the White
House and State Department.
When treaties, agreements and
other negotiations are made be-
tween the United Stats and Is-
rael, Margolin compares t h e
language of both texts. He ana-
lyzes the documents to prevent
semantic misunderstanding be-
tween the two countries.
