Jordan Authorities Promise
To Squelch Border Incidents

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Brig. Gen.
Mordecai Makleff, Chief of Staff
of the Israel Army of Defense,
welconied the position taken by
Jordan authorities at a top level
Jordan-Israel meeting and their
promise of active measures to
prevent infiltration of Israel
territory by bands from Jordan.
The Israel defense chief said
that there could be improve-
ment in the security situation if
the Jordanians really imple-
mented their commitments.
The meeting, held under the
chairmanship of UN truce chief,
Maj. Gen. Vagn B e n n 1 k e,
brought together at Govern-
fnent House, in Jerusalem, for
the first time in many months,
top Israel and Jordan com-
manders to discuss the border
situation.
Brig. Gen. Moshe Dayan, head
of Army operations, led the Is-
raeli mission and Brig. Gen
Enab Radi el Adam of the Arab
Legion General Staff, the Jor-
danian.
The four-hou r session was

.

conducted in what was des-
cribed as an atmosphere of
cordiality. The Jordanian
spokesman said his govern-
ment was determined to halt
the border -infiltration. The
Israeli chief promised the full
cooperation of the Israeli
forces.

A further meeting, to be at-
tended by officials of both coun-
tries, was scheduled. Plans were
also to be concerted for cooper-
ation between the Jordan and
Israel forces to prevent border
violations.

Riley Dispels War Fears

(

UNITED NATIONS, N.Y..,
(JTA)—Doubt that the inc'.-
dents which occur on the Israel-
Arab borders can lead to a full
scale resumption of war kw-
tween Israel and Arab countries
was expressed at a press confer-
ence by Lt. Gen. William - B.
Riley, who headed the truce or-
ganization in Palestine for five
years.
Gen Riley said however, that
there is a need to "recity" the
demarkation line set down in
tilt armistice of 1948. He em-
phasized that the armistice ne-
gotiators mapped the demarka-
tion line as a temporary line
only and urged that Israel and
Jordan should agree to adjust-
m ents.

Rabbis Join Christians
Against J. B. Mathews

Five Detroit Rabbis sent tele-
grams to Senator Charles Potter
(R, Mich.) praising his stand
against wholesale accusations of
Protestant clergy as being "the
single largest group in America
which spreads Communism "
This accusation was made by J.
B. Matthews recently appointed
by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy
(R, Wis.) as McCarthy's Senate
Government Operations Com-
mittee.
Three Democratic Senators
and Senator Potter are ques-
tioning the propriety of Mr.
Matthews' filling the position of
the director of the staff of the
committee in view of his blan-
ket accusations against the
Protestant clergy.
Rabbi Benjamin Gorrelick,
Dr. Richard C. Hertz, Rabbi
Samuel H. Prero, Dr. Frank
Rosenthal and Rabbi Leon Frain
are the Conservative, Orthodox
and Reform rabbis who sent the
wires. They joined some 100
clergymen of the Protestant
and Catholic faiths in Detroit
and Michigan in expressing
these views.

Rabbi Israel T. Notis was re-
cently elected by the Detroit
Council of Orthodox Rabbis to
replace Rabbi David Bakst as
executive secretary of the body.
Rabbi Bakst has assumed re-
sponsibility for overseeing kash-
ruth at new Sinai Hospital.
Rabbi Notis, a graduate of
Hebrew Theological College in
Chicago, Ill., has served the
Saginaw Jewish community for
18 years°.
The Council is planning a pro-
gram whereby each rabbi in the
city will visit patients at Sinai
Hospital during a specific week.
