Hebrew Month of Ab Ushers /in
`Nine Days; Period of Mourning

By RABBI SAMULE S. FOX

.

(Copyright, 1953. JTA)

The "nine days" that occur
beginning with the first day of
the Hebrew month of Ab and
ending with the Fast of the
ninth day of Ab are tradition-
' ly called the "nine days." This
al
i title was earned because they
are regarded as days of deep
mourning. No meat is consumed
on the Sabbath. Swimming
generally prohibited. The
Talmud states that "When Ab
comes in, gladness must be di-
minished." (Mishnah: Taanit
4:6). This must have been the
underlying reason for consider-
"ng the whole nine days as those
of mourning.
The Sabbath preceding the
Fast of Tisa B'ab was given the
special title of "Shabbos Cha-
zon." The term "Chazon" hap-
pens to be the first word of the
Book of the Prophet Isaiah.
Since' the first Chapter of the
book is read as the Haphtorah
reading for this Sabbath- and
the text starts with the word
"Chazon" (vision) the Sabbath
was given this name as a title.
In general this custom served
as a means of reminding the
people in the synagogue that
the Fast of the ninth of Ab
would come during the week. In
many similar instances the
synagogue reminded the people
of the oncoming occasions of
fasts and festivals by having the
preceding Sabbaths labelled
with special names.
It has become a custom not
to eat meat on these nine days.

Elsea Realty Reports
$1,900,000 in June Sales

Elsea Realty and Investment
Co. has reported the closing of
107 commercial and residential
sales during June, totaling $1,-
935,800, which is exclusive of
new construction.
Staunton M. Elsea, represent-
ing the firm, stated that there
is little change in used home
prices, although down payment
requirements are higher because
of the tightening of mortgage
money. New homes are slightly
higher due to wage increases
and a scarcity of low priced
lots.

Diabetes Deaths Higher
Among the Jews in Canada

MONTREAL, (JTA)—Diabetes
ranks fourth among the dis-
eases causing death among Jews
in Montreal, the Canadian Jew-
ish Congress statistical depart-
ment revealed here. This con-
trasts with the fact that the
disease ranks ninth among kill-
ers in the Anglo-Celtic ethnic
group and tenth among Cana-
dians of French extraction. The
study indicated that there was
no difference among ethnic
groups on other diseases.

Meat has been considered as a
food that is eaten in a mood
of gladness. Thus banquets,
even today, are usually meat
meals. Moreso was this true in
olden times. Even today, there
are certain occasions such as
Sabbaths and festivals when
one is required to eat meat as a
symbol of festivity and glad-
ness. As a symbol of our regret
during these nine days we re-
frain from the pleasure of eat-
ing meat. I have heard of one
who regards t h e abstinance
from meat on these nine days
as a symbol of our chagrin of
the slaughter of innocent vic-
tims in the days of the destruc-
tion of the Temple. Consuming
the meat of an innocent ani-
mal which has been slaughtered
on the day when we mourn the
slaughter of others, is not really
practical, nor timely.

Rothschild Descendant
Takes Stand in German.
'Jewish Bank Case'

FRANKFURT; (JTA) — Baron
Alexis von Goldschmidt-Roths-
child, a collateral descendant of
the famed Frankfurt Rothschild
banking dynasty, testified in a
Swiss court at Basle that three
years ago he had been on the
point of taking over the man-
agement of the "Jewish Bank"
in Frankfurt, and becoming one
of its principal shareholders.
• Just when negotiations had
been concluded, he indicated,
the State of Hesse closed the
bank amid a profusion of in-
flammatory publicity.
A transcript of his testimony
was read in the Frankfurt court
where the trial of five defend-
ants formerly connected with
the "Jewish Bank" has been in
progress since last fall and
where the Bank has often been
described in very disparaging
terms.
Bar on von Goldschmidt-
Rothschild, who is a banker in
Basle, had refused to come to
Germany. Representatives of
the Frankfurt court, prosecution
and defense therefore "journeyed
to Basle to listen to his deposi-
tion and to cross-examine him.
Germany's best-known Jewish
attorney, Joseph Klibansky, who
as the Bank's former legal ad-
viser is one of the defendants in
the case, took part in the pro-
ceedings in the Swiss courtroom.
His role in the 1950 negotiations
was warmly praised by Baron
von Goldschmidt Rothschild.
