CHICAGO,
seems as
though the entire country is
milling into the Windy City . .
Rooms are difficult to obtain in
the better hotels . . . This is
what the Chamber of Commerce
waits for each year ... the an-
nual Furniture Show . . . when
visitors galore ring the cash
registers aplenty wherever they
go ... Night Club and restaurant
owners are staying up late after
closing night counting the re-
ceipts and wishing the show
would never end.
DID YOU EVER walk up and
down 17 floors in one building?
. . They say that in order not
to miss anything in the Furni-
ture Mart, you have to stop at
every floor.
REGULAR BUSINESS contin-
ues on, but if an out-of-town
car is spotted, the general reac-
tion is that the drivers and
passengers came for only one
purpose .. . the Furniture Show
. . . So many reservations were
received' at the Edgewater Beach
Hotel that it had to hurry and
finish the outdoor pool which
wasn't expected to be completed
for at least another month . .
With the temperature reading
90 and above, many of the Edge-
water guests are staying over the
July 4 weekend and making a
vacation out of their trip.
GEORGE JESSEL, whose tele-
phone conversations with his
"Mama" have made millions
laugh, was toastmaster at the
usual dinner given each year for
furniture bigwigs . . . The chair-
man for the evening introduced
him as "an unusual specimen—
you have only to put a dinner
in his mouth and out comes a
speech." . . . Jessel snapped
right back with, "I want to call
attention to your chairman,
who is also unusual. You have
only to put a speech into his
mouth—and out comes your din-
ner." . . . He told the large
gathering that although he has
a large income, about 41 rela-
tives seem to live on it . . . One
clay, said Jessel, his Uncle Ra-
fael went too far . . . "So," said
the uncle, "I see you got a fine
new necktie, you loafer! Me you
won't even buy a grand piano!"
. Jessel related about the time
he attended a party and rushed
up to greet an old sweetheart,
but she was making a great play
for a South American million-
aire, and gave Jessel a haughty
stare . . "I don't believe I got
the name," she said coldly . . .
"No, you certainly didn't," agreed
Jessel, burning, "but baby, you
certainly tried hard enough!" ...
In 1940 he did marry a beautiful
young lady of 17 . . . When the
draft began he predicted, "The
Army will soon get me. My wife
was born after Pearl Harbor!"

Arabs Decide to Establish

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The

Syrian Embassy made known
that it will participate in the
establishment of an Arab prop
aganda bureau in Washington
and a large Arab exhibition in
New York City. From Beirut, it
was reported that the Lebanese
Cabinet voted last night to es-
tablish an office to organize a
boycott of foreigncompanies

getting everything in shape for
the P.G.A. Tourney, a small hur-
ricane-type wind, estimated at
about '75 miles per hour, lifted
the main refreshment stand
from the ground, caving in the
tent and crashing it to the
ground, beams and all . . . By
some quirk of fate, the two smal-
ler stands they had erected were
undamaged! . . . Word comes of
the observant rabbi in Detroit
who noted that members of his
congregation had a custom of
touching fingers to the lips, then
touching' the Torah with finger
tips . . . "Kiss the Torah," he
advised, "not with fingers, but
with your mouth. On the other
hand, when it comes to charity,
be more free with your hands,
and less with your mouth."

Budgets Reviewed by

Education

Review of the budgets of local
agencies is already underway by
the education division of the
Jewish Welfare Federation as
the division prepares to recom-
mend allocation of funds, re-
ceived through the 1953 Allied
Jewish Campaign, for agencies in
its field of service.
Under the chairmanship of
Morris Garvett, recommenda-
tions for allocation of funds to
local agencies will be made in
the near future while national
agencies will be budgeted in the
Fall. The recommendations are
subject to the approval of the
Federation board of governors.
Membership of the division
was announced this week as fol-
lows:

In the 1952-53 period, $228,691
was allocated by the Division
among Midrasha, Sholem Alei-
chem School, United. Hebrew -
Schools, United JeWish Folk
Schools, United Jewish High
School, Workmen's Circle School
and Yeshivah Beth Yehudah.
An allocation of $13,750 was
made for national agencies and
included American Association
for Jewish Education, Dropsie
College, Histadruth Ivrith and
the Yiddish Schientific Institute.
Budgeting is based on the ap-
plication of the Pre-Campaign
Formula as applied to the 1953
campaign achievement in ac-
cordance with the determination
of the board of governors.
