Author Admits Error,
Explains His Book
Editor, The Jewish News:
I have just seen a copy of your
Issue of May 22nd and write at
once to apologize very sincerely
for the factual error to which
your commentator, Philip Slom-
ovitz, draws attention in his re-
view of my recent book "WORLD
IN THE MAKING: The Story of
Intern a ti on al Co-operation,"
published by Henry Schuman
Inc., of New York.
I cannot imagine how it hap-
pened that the sentence to which
the reviewer rightly objects es-
caped notice, especially as my
manuscript and the proofs were
carefully read by quite a number
of authoritative people in the
field of international relations.
It is, of course, a well known
fact £hat Israel is one of the
most active and useful states of
the UN. I can only surmise that
the error arose from my unhap-
py psychological experience, dur-
ing the last four years, of lis-
tening to so many acrimonious
debates in the Security Council
and Assembly of the UN on the
admission of the score or more
of nations who are still waiting
on the doorstep, that I had over-
looked, in writing the sentence,
that Israel had been lucky
enough to have had her mem-
bership confirmed before this
miserable ban had fallen! The
country- intended was "Jordan,"
not "Israel." I can assure you
that this error will be corrected
in later editions and my pub-
lisher is making an adequate
corrigendum in the .present one
On the other point which your
commentator raises, I think I
should stress the fact that my
several references to Christiani-
ty and Mohammedanism were to
bring home the futility of con-
flict between these two- religions,
as divisive and regrettable ele-
ments in man's history; where-
as I had made no specific men-
tion of Judaisin, as it was irrele-
vant in this context. Neverthe-
less, as a Christian who has
made a lifelong habit of advo-
cating religious toleration, I be-
lieve my book will be strength-
ened by a specific reference to
the influence of Judaism as a
factor in world unity. I shall
certainly bring in this important
point- in a future edition, and I
thank your reviewer for making
it.
It is not irrelevant to his criti-
cisms however, that, in spite of
the limitations imposed by a
sketch of man's development
over 7000 years in
i .a juvenile
book of less than 160 pages, I
can nevertheless claim to have
presented a consistent case for
toleration, both racial and inter-
national, sometimes occupying
pages at a time with this theme.
In fact, the key-note of my book,
which so many reviewers have
lauded, is contained in the quo-
tation at the beginning of the
UN Charter: "To practice toler-
ance . . . " I am, therefore, dis-
tressed to find that your review-
er has completely ignored this
vital central message. w hile fas-
tening on a purely factual mis-
take which would be obvious to
well-informed readers or pass
unobserved amidst the mass of
historical and current informa-
tion compressed into so few
pages.
Yours respectfully,
JAMES AVERY JOYCE

A Report on Jews of Rome
Editor, The Jewish News:
On my recent visit to Rome I
was fascinated by the research
of this community's history.
The Jewish community of
Rome is the oldest in Europe.
One is amazed at the incredible
endurance of this community
because for a period of no less
than 2,000 years, everything was
done to humiliate, harass, and
oppress them. It is really mirac-
ulous how these Jews could sur-
vive so much willful murder,
robbery, plunder and incendiar-
iSm for centuries.
In Italy today the Jewish pop-
ulation numbers 35,000 in con-
trast to 45,000 prior to World -
War II. Upon special • orders of
Heinrich Himmler 8,000 were de-
ported and exte r m i n ate d. It
must be said, however, that the
behavior of Italians as individu-
als toward the native Jews as
well as the refugees, in the most
dangerous times, was always
sympathetic and kind, probably
the best among all the European
peoples.
Rome has 13.000 Jewish in-
habitants, of which more than
half are poor and dependent on
relief. The Joint Distribution
Committee has helped them con-
siderably in the post-war years,
and now they are getting finan-
cial assistance from the Jewish
Community Welfare Chest.
It seems almost inconceivable
that some inhabitants of the
Ghetto, having today the possi-
bility of moving into better
quarters. prefer to remain in un-:
esthetic and unsanitary condi-
tions, as in the oast centuries.
Is one to infer then that they
have lost consciousness of hu-
man dignity? Yet they are deep-
ly religious and have high moral
standings in their family and
community life.
"ORT" is doing a splendid job
with the children, but it is dif-
ficult to convince the parents
that children must go to school
and get a basic education—be-
cause, according to tradition,
these parents want to see their
girls married at an early age and
have their boys become "mer-
chants," that is, street peddlers.
However, the time is not far off
when the children of the Ghetto
will forsake their dismal dwell-
ings for new quarters, which will
permit brighter futures.
