EUGENE

HOWARD LEWIS

Arlene Berkovitz, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice M. Ber-
kovitz, of Jefferson Blvd., River-
side, Ont., was united in marri-
age to Eugene Howard Lewis,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Lewis,
of Houston, Texas, June 14 at
the Hotel Statler. Rabbis Jacob
Segal and Samuel Stollman of-
ficiated.
The bride wore an original
gown of blush pink mousseline
de sole, with motifs of hand-
corded Alencon lace appliqued
with small pearls and iridescent
beads Marking the off-the-
shoulder neckline. Mate h i n g
hand-corded Alencon lace with
pearls and iridescents was ap-
pliqued on the sides of the bouf-
fant skirt, which extended into
a formal train. Her three-tiered
finger tip veil of blush pink silk
illusion was held by a coronet of
matching pearls. She carried a
white Bible with pink stepha-
notis and two white orchids.
Her bridesmaids were Made-
lyn Muroff, Jane Bernstein and
Barbara Meretsky, and flower-
girl was Carolyn Burke. Arthur
Weingarden, Dave Gordon, Joe
Levy, and Barry Lewis assisted
the bridegroom.
The couple are honeymooning
in Colorado and New Orleans,
and will afterwards take up
residence in Houston, Texas.

Graecian Jews Thank
JDC for Post-War Aid

"Let all who are hungry come
and partake of our food . . ."
So reads the Passover Hagadah,
inviting Jews who are away
from home or in hunger to
enter the homes of their breth-
em on Sedar night.
Last Passover. Walter Jerome
Rubiner, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Rubiner, an ensign in
the United States Navy, was
with the Sixth Fleet when it
sailed into the harbor of Salon-
ica, Greece. The Jewish mem-
bers of the crew were given a
warm greeting by the Jewish
community there and invited to
a Sedar.
The community had been hit
hard by the war. Before the
invasion of Greece by Hitler's
legions, Salonica boasted a
Jewish community numbering
56,000. Only 600 Jews make up
that community today.
Help to the community was
immediately dispatched by the
American Joint Distribu t i o n
Committee — and recently Ru-
biner received the following let-
ter of thanks from the head of
the community there:
"Whenever you reach home,
please tell your people that the
Jewish community in Salonica
will never forget the help given
to them through the American
Joint Distribution Committee,
during the black days when the
very few alive returned from
concentration camps and jails.
"This precious and good-
hearted help has given us the
possibility to recover and stay
on our feet again. Your genero-
sity has remained as vivid as
ever in our hearts and in some
circumstances we try our best
to show that we are not un-
grateful."
