British Court Rules Divorce
Granted by Rabbis Is Valid

LONDON, (JTA) - A British
divorce court ruled that a divorce
granted by the Beth Din-Jew-
ish religious court-in England
was valid under English law.
The decision validated a bill
of divorcement granted by the
Beth Din to Mrs. Hannah Bar-.
Shefi, a resident of London.
The plaintiff had married El-
chanan Bar - Shefi, an Israeli
citizen, in Israel. The British
court held that since Israeli
law gave exclusive jurisdiction
in divorce cases to a religious
court, the British courts would
have to recognize decrees grant-
ed by such courts.

Law 'Grossly Inadequate'
FRANKFURT, June 14. (JTA)
-The proposed German Federal
law for the indemnification of
individual victims of the Nazi
regime is "grassly inadequate"
and disregards the precedent of
common law regarding the re-
sponsibility of a state for the
malfeasance of its officials, Dr.
Otto Kuester, restitution chief
for the province of Baden-Wu-
erttemberg, declared at a meet-
ing of the Frankfurt chapter of
the Society for Christian-Jewish
Cooperation.

Beginning with the fast of
the Seventeenth of Tamuz a
three-week mourning period is
initiated in memory of the de-
struction of the Temple in
times of old. Various restric-
tions are leveled &tiring this
period. Marriages (ire prohib-
ited. Blessing over new things
is delayed until after this pe-
riod. Some even refrain from
eating meat and wine (save
on the Sabbath) during this
period, although some observe
this latter prohibition only
during the last nine days of
this period. The prophetic por-
tions used for the Haphtorahs
of these weeks usually are
made up of texts which utter
the punishments and destruc-
tion which were prophesied
amongst the people of Israel in
turn for their crimes of idol-
atry among other sins.
