Mourners Hiss Rabbi
At A-Spies' Funeral;
Bloch Shouts 'Murder'

The funeral services for Ju-
lius and Ethel Rosenberg took
on the appearances of a politi-
cal demonstration last week
when a rabbi who asked the
mourners to bear no grudge
against the government was
hissed.
Rabbi Abraham Cronbach,
professor emeritus at the He -
brew Union College of Cincin-
nati, one of the four clergymen
whb had appealed in the final
days for executive clemency,
told his listeners: "We must es-
chew hatred, we must disdain
rancor, we must keep our
hearts clean of vindictiveness."

Rabbi Cronbach said of the
government prosecution : "Let
us give them credit for this
much : they did what they
thought right."

When the rabbi said this the
mourners hissed and whispered
disapprovingly as the clergy-
man continued the service, He
the listeners to demon-
. told
strate their "loyalty as Ameri
cang," and added, "We have
nothing to gain by America's
injury. We gain when Amer-
ica gains. We lose when Amer-
ica loses."

This passage from the rab-
bi's eulogy w a s met with
angry murmurs from the au-
•dience.

In contrast with the mild and
compassionate speech of Rabbi
Cronbach was that delivered by
Emanuel Bloch, who had con-
ducted the fight in behalf of
the Rosenbergs for three years.
Looking at the open caskets of
the Rosenbergs, Bloch shouted:
"I place the murder of the
Rosenbergs at the door of
President Eisenhower, Attorney
General Brownell and J. Edgar
Hoover. This is not American
justice . . We must be angry."
Bloch said that he had asked
that the execution of the Ros-
enbergs be postponed from the
scheduled time of 11 p.m. so
that it would not fall on the
Sabbath. He said "a barbarian
pushed up the time instead."
The Rosenbergs died shortly
after 7 p.m., Detroit time, in the
death chamber of Sing Sing
Prison, moments before the sun
set and ushered in the Sabbath.
They were the first Americans
to die for espionage under the
orders of a civilian court.

IN OUR CHAPEL we have a deep
appreciation of the religious signifi-

that the last farewell should be a
beautiful memorial, something to

least part of the anguish of loss.
Please remember that every member
