State Department Explains Meaning
Of Dulles Speech on Middle East

REBECCA GRATZ
(From a portrait by
Thomas Sully) -

tion of a portrait of Rebecca
Gratz on the front cover of the
June 1953 issue of the American
Jewish Archives ; magazine.
Miss Gratz, a distinguished
Jewess of Philadelphia in the
nineteenth century, is believed
by many authorities to be
Scott's "Rebecca," in "Ivanhoe,"
a novel now being shown in
movie-form by Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer.
The June issue of the Ameri-
can Jewish Archives magazine
publishes, with the picture of
Miss Gratz, an excerpt from a
letter written by her on July 12,
1884, to her brothel-, Benjamin,
in Lexington, Ky., on the sub-
ject of religious bigotry. Her
letter was written following
Catholic - Protestant riots in
Philadelphia, in which dozens of
persons were killed or maimed.
The original letter is in the
Rosenbach Collection of the
American Jewish Historical So-
ciety in New York.
An excerpt from the letter
follows: •
"Intolerance has been too
prevalent of late, and many of
the clergy of different denomi-
nations are chargable with its
growth. If such teaching -was
preached by the pastors of their
own congregations a n d the
charge of others left to their
own clergy, God would be better
served and human society gov-
erned more in accordance to
His holy- commandments."

WASHINGTON, (J T A) —T h e
American Legion officially de-
scribed President Eisenhower's
request for emergency legisla-
tion to admit 240,000 additional
aliens as a "calculated attempt
at a -back-door attack on the
national origins quota system."
C. Anderson, chairman of the
Legion's immigration and nat-
uralization subcommittee, made
this charge today in testimony
before the House Judiciary Sub-
committee holding hearings on
the President's immigration re-
quest.
Mr. Anderson supported the
McCarran-Walter Act and said
he regretted it "should have
been tossed into the politieal
arena as was done following its
passage."
