Jewish Shops in Holland
Must Close Each Sunday

By N. E. ARONSTAM, M.D.

Vitally needed bricks for Is-
rael's building industry are pro-
duced at the Naaman Brick Fac-
tory at Haifa, with the aid of
investments made by the State
of Israel bond drive. No material
is needed from abroad since
there is plenty of clay in Israel's
soil for brick production.

Neo-Nazis Seek to Kill
West European Unity

The ideal of a united Western

THE HAGUE, (JTA) - The Europe, which has led to the

Netherlands Minister for Eco-
nomic Affairs, Dr. G. J. M. Veld-
kamp, refused to grant permis-
sion for Jewish shops in Am-
sterdam which are closed on
Saturday to remain open be-
yond 2 p.m. on Sunday after-
noons. He specifically stressed
that his decision was not in-
t e nd e d as a discriminatory
measure against the Jews.

Before the war Jewish shops
which remained closed on Sat-
urdays were permitted to re-

main open on Sundays until 6
p.m. After the war the time
limit was set at 2 p.m. Re-
cently the Amsterdam City
Council agreed to extend the
closing time to the pre-war 6
p.m., but Minister Veldkamp re-
fused to go along with this de-
cision.

National Office Cuts Off
Amherst College Fraternity

AMHERST, Mass., (JTA)-The
Amherst College chapter of Phi
Delta Theta fraternity was sus-
pended from the national organ-
ization recently, apparently be-
cause the local group had
pledged freshmen members
without regard to the national
group's constitutional ban on
non-Aryan members.
The president of the Amherst
chapter, commenting on the dis-
affiliation action, pointed out
that the "Aryans only" provi-
sion was at variance with an
Amherst College ruling prohib-
iting dikrimination by campus
groups. Several other college
fraternities have severed nation-
al ties over the same issue.

Goldmann, Kallen Receive
Dropsie Honorary Degrees

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA)-Hon-
orary degrees were awarded to
Dr. Nahum Goldmann and Prof.
Horace M. Kallen by Dropsie
College during its Founder's Day
exercises. Dr. Goldmann re-
ceived a Doctorate of Laws and
Prof. Kallen was given a degree
of Doctor of Literature.
Dr. Goldmann delivered the
principal address at the exer-
cises. Dr. Abraham A. Neuman,
president of Dropsie College, also
addressed the ceremony. Dropsie
College is the only American in-
stitution of higher learning
which confers doctorate degrees
exclusively.

An. Ochs Story: Bennett Cerf
tells this story: The late Adolph
Ochs, publisher of "The New
York Times," cherished a par-
ticular fondness for a rewrite
man named Carr. "I know a
hundred fellows who can write
a tiptop story," he would say,
"but Carr is the only one who
can cut it in half and preserve
all the essential details." Mr.
Ochs showed his appreciation by
handing Carr a hundred dollar
bill every time Mrs. Carr pre-:
sented her husband with a new
heir or heiress. Eight times he
shelled out without a murmur,
but when Carr announced.
"Well, sir, our ninth child was
born this morning." Mr. Ochs
produced his pocketbook with
some reluctance and remarked
dryly, "I suggest that you make
this Carr the caboose!"

creation of the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization and the
Treaty for a European Defense
Community, is being perverted
by the German extreme nation-
alists for their own unsavory po-
litical purposes, a survey - re-
leased by the World Jewish Con-
gress on West Germany charges.
The 45-page survey, titled
"West Germany: 1953," and
written by Dr. Gerhard Jacoby
of the Congress' Institute of
Jewish Affairs, asserts that the
German extremists have abused
the slogan of Western unity by
adopting the same slogan "which
has nothing to do with the Pan-
European ideology as it has been
developed by responsible states-
men like Schuman in France
and Adenauer in West Germany.
They proceed from the ideology
of a united Europe under Ger-
man leadership. They consider
the unification of Europe from
the viewpoint of Hitler's "Mein
Kampf."

Bolton Bill on Arabs
Introduced in Congress

WASHINGTON, (JTA) - T h e
House Foreign Affairs Commit-
tee is soon expected to report
out for floor action a bill intro-
duced by Rep. Frances P. Bolton
providing for an investigation
by the Mutual Security Agency
of the Arab refugee situation.
Mrs. Bolton, chairman of the
Near Eastern Subcommittee of
the Foreign Affairs Committee,
introduced the bill which would
charge the MSA director with
conducting an intensive study
of the Arab refugee problem and
reporting back within 90 days
with recommendations.
Asking quick Congressional
action on the measure, Mrs. Bol-
ton said that President Eisen-
hower "has made it clear that
the United States intends to pay
more attention to the Arab
states during his administra-
tion."
She said that the latest re-
ports given her subcommittee
held that "80 percent" of the
Arab refugees might be subject
to Communism and might join
in any uprising which held the
promise of a possibility of
change. "Can one blame them?"
she asked.

together, saith the Lord: though
your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow;
though they be red like crimson,
they shall be as wool.-(Isaiah

1. That in Upanishads (Hindu
sacred lore) the following pray-
er appears: "0 God, 0 Father,
completely wipe away our sins."
Compare it with the "Avinu
Malkenu," recited on Rosh.
Hashanah and Yom Kippur,
which reads: "Our Father, Our
King, blot out our transgres-
sions." . . . How strange!
2. In the old Mayan language
the word for master is "Paal
batab." In Hebrew it is "Baal
baith." What similarity!
3. In the Upanishads the fol
lowing quotation appears: "Thou
shalt gain by giving away : thou
shalt not covet." This is one of
the decalogue.
4. In the writings of Confucius
this strange utterance appears:
"Penitence, Prayer and Benevo-
lence will obliterate severe pun-
ishment. "Compare it with the
Hebrew: "Penitence, Prayer and
Charity will avert the severe
decree."

For Chemical Output

NEW YORK, (JTA)-Plans for
the establishment of a $35,000,-

ing complex in Israel were re-
ported by the Jewish Agency.
The plans envisage production
of nitrogen fertilizers, phos-
phates, sulphuric and p h o s-
phoric acids, soda ash and mag-
nesia compounds. •
The project will have two cen-
ters. A pant at Haifa will con-
centrate on the production of
nitrogen fertilizers. The other
items will be produced in a
group of plants located at Suk-
reir, on the Mediterranean coast,
south of Tel Aviv.

thusiastic Hamburg audience
demanded several curtain calls
at the conclusion of the Ger-
man premiere of "The Castle,"
Max Brod's dramatization of
Franz Kafka's novel of the same
name. Both the late Mr. Kafka
and Brod are Jews. The latter
is the winner of the Bialik Prize,

his principal literary executor.
