OUR KIDDIES'

N

— By Uncle David

Dear Boys and Girls:
We can, and we should, learn from all peoples. Therefore, if
I quote a parable from another group, you will understand that
the wisdom of all nations always teaches humanity an important
iesson.
Today I wish to quote a Chinese proverb: "One picture is
worth a thousand words." Taking this as my lesson for this week,
share with you this photograph:

•

/t is a familiar scene to you
and to me. We see it every Fri-
day and on all holidays in our
omes. It is Mother lighting the
Sabbath candles.
Do you agree with me when I
say that this is one of the finest
ceremonies in our homes?
The Ten Commandments serve
as a guide for all humanity.
They were handed down to our
ancestors by Moses, who received
them on Mount Sinai. T h e
Fourth Commandment is:
"Remember the Sabbath day
to keep it holy."
Sabbath denotes rest. On this
!d ay we attend synagogue serv-
ices, we read Holy Scriptures,
ye rejoice in the glories of our
heritage as Jews. A n d it is
Mother who starts the day—by
lighting the candles on the pre-
vious evening. The Jewish Sab-
bath and all the Jewish festivals
always begin at sundown of the
previous day.
An able Jewish writer, Nina
Salaman, has • translated from
the Hebrew a song written 400
years ago by Isaac Luria, entitled
`11_ Sabbath Table Song." One
of the stanzas reads:
"If I keep Thy command I in-
herit a kingdom,

If I treasure the Sabbath I
bring Thee the best—
The noblest of offerings, the
sweetest of incense—
A Sabbath of rest.
This day is for Israel light
and rejoicing,
A Sabbath of rest.
This is only one of the many
beautiful lines written about the
Sabbath. I share it with you,
knowing that you, too, will be
happier in its observance when
you know the beauty of its
meaning and its value for all
mankind.
One of our people's greatest
gifts to humanity is the Sab-
bath. With this gift began true
Rest. When many peoples la-
bored and slaved seven days a
week, the Jews rested one day.
The world learned about a rest
day from us. Let us cherish this
day.
Good Shabbos to all of you!
