Lester-Israel Rites
Slated for September

The Florida Legislature, at
the final meeting of its 1953 ses-
sion, passed an explosives con-
trol bill aimed at- state-wide
regulation of the sale of dyna-
mite and other explosives.
The need for such a measure,-
which places the manufacture,
distribution and sale of exploS
Ives under strict state_ supervi-
sion, became clear after the
wave of Florida terror bomb-
ings in 1951.
At that time, the Anti-Defa-
mation League of Bnai Brith.
urged the passage of such a law
as part of a suggested three
pronged program of counter-
action which.-also included Com-
munity surveys of tension areas
and a general educational pro-
gram in behalf of better inter-
group relations. -
Calling the - Klan a "cancerous
growth," the Grand Jury, which
has been investigating the Flor,
ida bombings and other acts of
violence against minority groups
in the past few years, reported
that "all these acts are primar
ily within the jurisdiction of the
state police power."
While the bill was under con-
sideration, Dade County Sheriff,
Tom Kelly, urged the Legisla-
ture to pass it "before more peo-
ple get killed." Strong support
of the measure also was voiced
by other state officials and the
Miami press.
