first boys' self-governing groups
organized in the Jewish com-
munity by the late Fred M. But-
zel—presented the Jewish Com-
munity Center with a time-
honored gavel used by the Club
38 years ago.
The Trysquare Club met 'in
the Hannah Schloss Building
which served as the first center
Of Jewish communal activities in
the city of Detroit and many of
its members and those of other
groups which used the building
have since become some of the
community's outstanding lead-
•ers in social service.
The early work of such agen-
des as the Jewish Social Service
Bureau, United Hebrew Schools
and Jewish Community Center
was carried on in this building,
under the auspices of the United
Jewish Charities, forerunner of
our present-day Jewish Welfare
Federation. .
