`The Juggler,' Israel Film, at Madison

Actually filmed in Israel, the
world's newest nation, and star-
ring Kirk Douglas and featuring
Milly Vitale, Italy's number one
screen actress, Stanley Kramer's
production of "The Juggler" will
have its Detroit premiere Friday
at the Madison Theater. On the
same outstanding program will
be "Flame of Calcutta," oriental
adventure spectacle in techni-
color.
Essentially a story of suspense,
Stanley Kramer, maker of Acad-
emy Award winner "High Noon,"
unfolds a powerful drama of
flight and pursuit across Israel.
Based on the best-selling novel
by Michael Blankfort, "The Jug-
gler" tells about a man whose
uncontrollable fear of imprison-
ment leads him to see in every
routine interrogation the hated
inquisition of the Nazis and in
every uniformed official, a Fas-
cist soldier. His neurotic behav-
ior causes him to be challenged
by a policeman and, after a fren-
zied battle, he flees believing he
has killed his assailant. He leads
the police, headed by Paul Ste-
wart as Detective Karni, a rug-
ged cross-country chase through
scenery and atmosphere that
typifies the Israel of today.

chase, he is sheltered by an
attractive farm worker Ya' El,
played by Milly Vitale, finds ro-
mance and, ultimately, the peace
that is - possible through self-
understanding. Joey Walsh, cur-
rent star of "Hans Christian
Anderson" is cast as Yehoshua
Bresler, a devoted youngster
who first breaks through the
juggler's iron defenses which he
has built against life itself.
In "The Juggler," the audience
realizes that the forces of the
law are benevolent and are at
once sympathetic with both the
hunted and hunters. The pro-
cessing of Jewish immigrants,
the well-ordered cities, the pio-
neer . farm communities, and the
problem of border tension be-
tween the Jews and Arabs are
all authentically depicted. The
taunt direction. by Edward
Dmytryk as well as the sensi-
tively dynamic music by George
Antheil add superior quality bi-
"The Juggler."'
