JNF Pays $15,000,000 Bank of America Loan
Affirmed by Senator Taft
CINCINNATI, (JTA) —Senator
Robert A. Taft said he had sup-
ported the independence of Is-
rael and "stood on their side
against Egypt and Jordan, which
tried to destroy them" because
of his "earnest belief in justice
and freedom and the keeping of
promises."
The Republican Senate ma-
jority leader, in a prepared ad-
dress read for him .by his son
at the silver anniversary meet-
ing • here of the National Con-
ference of Christians and Jews,
declared that the Jewish State
"should have been established at
the height of the power of the
Allies during the second World
War." Had that been done, he
added, "I doubt if we would ever
have had the Israel war or the
fleeing of the Palestine Arabs or
the dangerous conditions in that
region of the world today be-
cause Israel had to take up arms
to establish its own independ-
ence, the British having aban-
doned the mandate."
.
Sen. Taft said he had sup-
ported the Zionist movement
"because it seemed to me it
would be the only way in
which we could assure free-
dom for millions of Jews who
lived in countries - where they
would always be subjected to
intermittent attacks •and per-
secution. I supported it be-
cause it undertook to relieve

Dr. Harris J. Levine, president the JNF's finance committee.
He warned7 however, of the
`serious situation" resulting from
the war for Israel's independ-
ence. "Because of that war," he
said, "partly through the in-
tolerance of their own leaders,
900,000 refugees left the Jewish
section of Palestine and are still
