Our Boys
and Girls
Hello, Boys and Girls: •
Will there be lots of excite-
ment in your town this week-
end? Parades, patriotic meet-
ings, speeches? We'll be cele-
brating Memorial Day. It falls
on Saturday, so of course our
celebrations, many of them led
by the Jewish War Veterans,
will take place on Sunday.
Memorial Day was originally
intended as a day to honor the
(alien soldiers of the Union
Army during the Civil War, but
it is generally accepted now as
la, time to remember the soldiers
of all wars and, in fact, all our
loved ones who no longer are
with us. Many people observe
the occasion by visiting • the
graves of their loved ones and
putting flags or flowers there.
Hence the other name for this
holiday—Decoration Day.

Did you know that more than
6,000 Jews fought in the Union
Army during the Civil War. And
yet, there were only . 200,000 Jews
in the whole country . •a,-t the
time. . .
American Jews :were:. quick to
answer the call for troops to
defend the Union and to tight
against the institution - of. .slav-
ery.111 is a part of -our Jewish
hei ieaee . to champion the cause*
of freeelefre for all peoples. -
Yes,: there were many Jews
living in the South who were
loyal to the Confederacy. The
most prOthinent was Judah P.
Benjainin, Secretary of State for
the Confederacy. Other South-
ern .Jews . were against slavery
and not afraid to say so. Rabbi
Bernard Blowy of New Orleans
openly delivered pro-Union ser-
-mone 'from his pulpit.
Ninny Northern 'Jews won dis-
tinction during the • CiVil War:
Seven were awarded . the Con-
gressional Medal of Honor.
Officers under whom Jewish
soldees fought valiantly recog-
nized their bravery and com-
mended them publicly. Major
General Oliver a Howard, under
whcen many Jewish soldiers
s e r v e d, wrote: "Intrinsically,
there are no more patriotic men
to be found in the country than
those who claim to be of He-
brew descent."

Not all Army leaders felt this
way, however. There is the re-
grettable story of General
Ulysses S. Grant, who later be-
came President,, who was dis-
turbed by Jewish peddlers and
on December 17, 1862, issued an
order expelling all Jews within
twenty-four hours from the area
under his command.
Jews all over the 'North and
West protested this inhumanity.
Within a few weeks, two dele-
gations had been to see Presi,
dent Lincoln. C, J. Kaskel, a
Jewish merchant of Paducah,
went to the president with his
representative in Congress. He
presented his case.
"And so the children of Israel
were driven from the happy
land of Canaan?" Lincoln asked.
"Yes, and that is why we have
'come to Father Abraham, ask-
ing protection," Kaskel replied.
_ Lincoln immediately issued a
letter to General Balleck, order
ing that Grant's order be re-
voked.
Meanwhile, another delegation
(■•■ •---
of five rabbis, businessmen and
lawyers, including the distin-
guished Rabbi Isaac M. Wise of
Cincinnati, a 1 s o visited the
President. Rabbi Wise later
wrote: "The President fully
convinced us that he feels no
prejudice against any national-
ity and especially against the
Israelites." _ ,

We all know that not alone in'
the Civil War have American
Jews been enthusiastic partici-
pants in their country's efforts
to protect freedom. This week-
end we will honor all men and
women, Jews and non-Jews, who
have fought for their country
with honor.

`Our Champ :' Tribute
To 'Ray mond Sokolov
Eleven-year-old Raymond
Sokolov finished second in the
national spelling bee and earned
the following editorial tribute,
under the heading "Our
Champ," from The Detroit News,
sponsor of the bee in this city:
Detroit has reason to be
prouder than ever of Raymond
Sokolov, 'its two - time repre-
_sentative in the national spell-
ing bee.
The little guy, now 11, didn't
win, but he came as close as
one can without winning—and
after as courageous a. battle as
has been put up by a Detroit
entrant in the big event.
Last year when Raymond
f i n i s h e d_ twenty-second, he
apologized to the people of
_Detroit "for letting them
down:" This year, finishing
second after a record-break-
ing 10 hours of spelling, Ray-
mond burst into tears.
Well, we're sure we'd have
done the same if we'd been in
Raymond's place and espe-
cially- if we had been downed
by such a silly-sounding word
as "spermaceti." Raymond
need not be ashamed of his
tears; they were those of a
gallant and unusually deter-
mined boy.

Israel Establishes
One New Settlement
Every Other Day
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The es-
tablishment of new settlements
in Israel at the rate of one
every other day is being main-
tained despite the critical lack
of funds and despite the fact
that the Jewish Agency is
forced to borrow money in an-
ticipation of funds from the
United Jewish Appeal in the U. S.
to keep up its present coloniza-
tion tempo, Dr. George Joseph-
thal, Jewish Agency treasurer,
said here.
Dr. Josephthal emphasized
that there are three principal
objectives to this accelerated
colonization program : 1. Com-
batting unemployment; 2. Fill-
ing gaps in the chain of border
settlements needed for security
reasons; 3. Exploitation of large
water resources that have be-
come available through the new
Yarkon-Negey pipeline, nearing
completion.
The Agency official said that
Israel has now reached a turn-
ing point in its development.
He emphasized that the short-

Towber Film at Dexter Theater;
Noted Actor Gets Return Call
Scene from "MOTTEL THE OPERATOR"
4
Capturing the interest of his
audiences during the last week,
Chaim Towber, popular Yiddish
actor, was asked to make a re-
turn appearance here. As a re-
sult, his film, "Mottel the Oper-
ator," will be shown at the Dex-
ter this Friday; Saturday and
Sunday.
Mr. Towber is receiving ac-
claim for his local appearances.
On Saturday, even the children
responded with appreciation,
many of them asking him to
sing popular Jewish songs.
In his current film, Mr. Tow-
ber depicts the Jewish tailor
from the earliest days to the
present. The story shows the
tailor as he carried the sewing
machine on his back, until the
days of greater progress in the
industry.
He received 'a prize for this
film—for its social message, for
the way it depicts Jewish life,
for his commendable acting.
A cast of 50 assists him—in-

Shaare Zedek Hospital
A recent story in the columns
of The Jewish News which told
of the formation of an Ameri-
can Committee for Shaare Zedek
Hospital in Jerusalem ,inadver-
tently omitted the address of
the committee.
. In order to facilitate many
readers who have asked for the
address so they may send funds,
it is printed herewith: 261

The hospital, founded over 50
years ago, is currently . seeking
